• The Brothers Bloom Gets Creative

As I pushed my way through another sitting of Brick over the past couple of nights, it dawned on me that writer/directer Rian Johnson hasn’t done anything at all since that 2005 venture that was both ambitious and thoughtful, as well as original – and worked like gangbusters. So why the hell has he not done anything else since? Well hopefully the answer is that he has been perfecting his latest screenplay and sophomore directed The Brothers Bloom.

Word around the campfire (from TIFF and other festivals) is that this newest outing isn’t quite the movie Brick is in terms of scope and ingenuity, but I still have high hopes for the limited release coming next month. Particularly after seeing this recently released one-sheet that is quite exquisite in detail. Sort of reminds me a little of a more reserved version of the Hell Ride poster that was released around this time last year. Check it out…

Looks like someone has been going into Ricky Jay’s archive of playbills and classic posters! Nice.

From Rian Johnson’s Blog on the Brothers Bloom:

“This is not a new official one sheet for the movie. Instead, it’s something I asked my cousin Zach to work up, mostly just to hang on our walls. I’m really proud of Zach’s work on it, I think it captures the tone of the movie in a very special way.

    Enjoy!”

I saw this on a festival last year and it was great fun! I had pretty high expectations so I have a feeling I will like it even more a second time.

If I remember correctly the director even showed up and talked about the movie.

I like it! And I’m so looking forward to this film, it’s not even funny. Also not funny – how many times they’ve moved the release date. Seems like every time I thought I was getting close to being able to see it, they snatched it further away again.

I sat down with Rian via Skype a couple of weeks ago. Super swell guy, who turned me onto Bob Dylan’s “Themetime Radio” serious which I’m really enjoying.

I was on the fence with Bloom. I liked a number of things (Weisz, Kikuchi, Max Records (as Young Bloom, soon to be “Wild Thing Max”) and in particular, Ricky Jay’s narration. My full Bloom Review is over at Twitch: http://twitchfilm.net/site/view/tiff-review-the-brothers-bloom/

Glad you guys like my poster!
Ricky Jay’s old posters were actually a great inspiration. Rian had some of them, that for some reason had wound up on my brother’s wall, and I spent an awful lot of time looking at them. The nice thing about being an artist is you can spend a day drinking beer and looking at cool posters, and call it work.

I can’t wait ’till the movie comes out!

    @Kurt

but it hasn’t inspired you to watch I’m Not There yet, huh?

btw how are you getting Dylan’s Themetime Radio, I haven’t been able to find it anywhere, even BBC blocks us.

  8. Kurt says:

@Rot ^^^^^^^^^^^^ Er, um, ah, *cough* *cough*. you get the idea.

  9. Kurt Halfyard says:

Zachary. It is a mighty fine piece of work. There was mucho discussion of Mr. Jay in our conversation and that poster gives me a pretty warm and fuzzy feeling. Darn Good Work Sir!

(You should be talking to our Omar Swarez who also frequents these parts and who also cuts a mean One Sheet).

reminds me Ricky Jay is coming to Toronto to do a show of some sort, saw the ad in the free press.

Got Me Tickets for the Thursday Night SHow. $100 a pop is not cheap (but right down in front), but the man only comes to Toronto once a decade (excluding the occasional Mamet Premiere at TIFF.

I’m pumped for that show, as Jay is one of my personal favorite entertainers on the planet.
