• The Matrix @ 10.

I have a real soft-spot for the sequel and we can all agree that the third one is the turd one. But indulge in this little strip from XKCD (Via Shawn Levy whose blog uses Marina’s pre-RowThree moniker: Mad About Movies)

I’m going to get shit for this but I don’t hate The Matrix Revolutions. Yes, it’s a “turd” compared to the first and only a little further down the rung from the second and as a single movie, it completely doesn’t work but I do like some of the imagery and the play-out of the story.

And that’s someone defending the film. What a piece of shit.

It does have its moments but it’s been a while since I’ve seen it and to be frank, 2 and 3 blend together a whole lot – probably because I haven’t seen them nearly as many times as the first.

  3. Rusty James says:

It does not have it’s moments.

  4. Rusty James says:

That film plays like the direct to video sequel made by people who had no idea what made the original popular.

    • Marina Antunes says:

I totally disagree. I do think that the sequels, primarily the third, lose steam and stretch the ideas of the first too far to the point where they lose any power or interest that they held in the first but Revolutions is not a completely crappy movie. As soon as I can get a minute here, I’ll embed a few files.

  5. Goon says:

The sequels are ass, but I actually liked part 3 more than part 2.

I think its because part 2 had so many apologists who insisted “just wait for part 3, you’ll see”

    btw

By the way, looove the gag about Morpheus sucking at explaining things. I totally sympathize with Morpheus there. I hate it when some know it all steps on my toes. YOU’RE RUINING HIS SALES PITCH YOU HORSE FACED SHREW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. This is one of those films that I do wish they left it at just the one film. I literally remember the people I was with seeing it at the Uptown and we decided to walk all the way home so we could talk about it along the way.

I admit I barely remember the 2nd and 3rd one so hard to comment there. I might revisit them, or leave those memories foggy and groggy.

It took twenty minutes to find this picture, so you better look at it (someone maybe embed it plz)

When the 2nd film is “In the Matrix” it is fabulous, and I dig all the programming metaphors visualized in the film and I love the set up. The complete lack of pay-off in #3 was embarrassing and lazy.

But really, the 2nd film is at least as good as the first one. People seem to be eager to forgive many of the flaws of the first one, the first act that struggles and coughs along, the ‘kiss me awake’ finish. Some of the film is really cringe-worthy. And of course the sci-fi concepts were hardly new there, if you were a fan of cyberpunk literature and Anime.

But yea, the did an awesome job of bring together anime styles, sci-fi ideas and snazzy special effects into a compelling package. The second film followed that up quite well.

  10. Rusty James says:

@ I dig all the programming metaphors visualized in the film

really? They’re so arduous and didactic. Is it really still a “metaphore” if you spend the next ten minutes explaining it?
That film is like reading one of Rot’s posts.

    ZING!

I loved the rave scene the most in the second one. So hot and relevant.

  12. Rusty James says:

And I’m not so forgiving of the first one. I wouldnt’ say the first act struggles, I do think the halfway point is pretty creaky. I’m not a fan of any of the training stuff. I think they didn’t really know what to do in the middle of the film.

    We think you’re “the one”.
    Oh no! you’re not!

Well, we all know he is so you as well just get to it already.

Still, when I watch the film it’s never an issue because it has *that quality*. The second one, not so much.

  13. Rusty James says:

Swarez, one of these days I’m gonna finally figure out if you’re a master of sarcasm or just pretentious.

  14. swarez says:

I just pretend to be pretentious.

  15. Henrik says:

I like the second one better. It has more exciting action sequences.

Recently I have grown fond of Cypher in the first one though. His dilemma is interesting to me, and I think it’s a cool philosophical villain, like Zorg or The Joker in the dark knight, these villains always seem wellplaced in actionmovies.

  16. Henrik says:

    “We think you’re “the one”.
    Oh no! you’re not!

Well, we all know he is so you as well just get to it already.”

Oh yeah I fucking despise this in movies. The example that always springs to mind as being particularly stupid and frustrating is Aragorn dying in the lord of the rings.

  17. Kurt says:

@Henrik “The example that always springs to mind as being particularly stupid and frustrating is Aragorn dying in the lord of the rings.”

Good call on that one. Agreed that that was pretty laboured in the second flick.

Speaking of THE ONE, Mr. “WHOA!” introed the ANVIL Premiere in Los Angeles on April 7th. Video embedded of intro an ‘in theatre’ set from Anvil.
