  • Terminator Salvation: The New Trailer

    14

Terminator Salvation Movie StillIt seems that we haven’t talked too much about it around these parts but doing a search through the site, I discovered that there have been numerous posts on the upcoming Terminator film, all of them from me, which suggests that I am mildly obsessed with McG’s take on the classic franchise. This new take, starring Christian Bale as John Connor, is scheduled to hit theatres in May but the trailers haven’t really given us much to go on and though I’ve liked some of the designs, I’m also a tad bit cautious about getting my hopes up too high only to be disappointed.

Terminator Salvation takes place after Skynet has destroyed most of the world in a nuclear holocaust and Connor, the leader of the survivors, is forging ahead to keep humanity alive. It’s a great concept, and one that I’ve been curious about since in the past we’ve only seen glimpses of life post Skynet, but I’m still on the fence. I like Bale but he still appears to be playing with the raspy voice, one of the things that really annoyed me in The Dark Knight (our review) but I’m willing to go with it, especially after seeing the latest trailer.

Not only do we get to see a little more of the post-Skynet world, but we also get more of a look at Sam Worthington and the role his character plays in the story. This could be the movie that puts Worthington on the map. I could do without the car crash but am happy to see it didn’t end in a big, Bay-like explosion and the image of the building collapsing is pretty spectacular. And huge props for the use of NIN’s excellent “The Day The World Went Away” as soundtrack music. Couldn’t have picked a better selection. Overall, not mind blowing but definitely exciting.

Terminator Salvation opens on May 22nd.

  • Bello to Star in Adaptation of Oates’ Rape: A Love Soty

    0

Rape: A Love Story Book CoverI had to do a double take on my first glance at the title for this upcoming film: Rape: A Love Story. Yes, it’s provocative and yes, it did get my attention.

Thankfully, this isn’t the case of a studio trying to get attention (or maybe it is) instead the film’s title is taken directly from the material it is based on, a novella by acclaimed writer Joyce Carol Oates. The novella tells the story of Teena a 30-something widow, who, on her way home from a party, is beaten, gang-raped and left for dead except that she survives the attack, which is witnessed by her 12 year old daughter Bethie. The novella looks at aftermath of sexual violence from Teena’s perspective and the remorse she feels for having survived it, Bethie who wishes she could help her mother, and John Dromoor, a young police officer who wants revenge for Teena. This is one of Oates’ works which I haven’t read but I have enjoyed her work over the years (particularly “The Tattooed Girl”) and this sounds as evocative as I’ve come to expect from the respected author.

Harold Becker, the director of Taps and Malice, will direct the film which has just signed on a potentially good cast. Maria Bello will play Teena, the raped woman while Abigail Breslin will play the 12 year old daughter. So far, it all sounds like it’s on track with the original material but the casting of Samuel L. Jackson as John suggests that writer John Mankiewicz has made a few changes to the original.

I have no doubt that Bello can handle the heavy lifting of the role (the trailers for the yet to be released Downloading Nancy certainly suggest so) but I’m concerned about Breslin who hasn’t been given a chance to flex her young acting muscle and this role will require some serious work. As for Jackson, he’s a wild card occasionally knocking performances out of the ballpark.

I’m curious to see what comes of this production. The material could be difficult to adapt but I’m hopeful that this will come out on the good side of the fence.

  • Nick Cave Goes Down The Road

    The Road Movie Set Photo

I’m starving for The Road news. What is going on with this film? It was supposed to be released last year, then it was put on the backburner for 2009 release and now it seems we may not get to see it until very late in 2009. For good reason, I assure you, but still. I’m dying for information here!

Thankfully, our friends at Quiet Earth are on the case and they’ve uncovered a tidbit that will tide me over for a few more days. BBC4 recently aired a segment which featured some discussion of John Hillcoat’s adaptation including an excerpt from McCarthy’s interview with Oprah last year. But that’s not the real goodness. The clip also features short excerpts of the film’s score which was composed by Nick Cave. It’s not much to go on but it’s sure to keep you on your toes for more news to come.

The other tidbit is speculation that The Road is so good, it’s likely to garner Oscar attention and the distributors, Dimension Films, may want to hold onto the film until later in 2009 to make the most impact with the Academy. Great news for the film but not so great for the fans who are eagerly anticipating any tidbit of information. At this rate, we’ll be lucky to see a trailer by July.

  • New Trailer & Clips for Bruce McDonald’s Pontypool

    0

Pontypool Movie StillIt seems a bit unfair but it’s the most I can do at this point. You see, Bruce McDonald’s outstanding Pontypool doesn’t open in Toronto until Friday and in other Canadian markets for 2 weeks but I’m feeling the need to tease you all with the abundance of material that is popping up online.

Kurt pulled a fast one (I forgive you) and posted the fancy new trailer over at Twitch, and now the folks at Dread Central have gone live with five short film clips from the movie that have somehow ended up on YouTube. Not sure how long these will stay up and frankly, I don’t know if you should see them as they could be potentially spoilerific but if you’re curious, you can check them out over there.

And no, there’s no exaggeration in Kurt’s review; this movie will rock your socks off. Pontypool opens in Toronto on March 6th, and in a number of other Canadian markets (including Vancouver) on March 13. Our American friends can look for it opening in limited release on May 29th. I can’t think of a better way to spend Friday the 13th.

Trailer, and one very cool spoiler free clip, tucked under the seat!

  • Fast Zombies with Guns

    3

Fast ZombiesYou can’t out run them… and you sure as hell can’t outrun their six little friends. Fast Zombies with Guns takes zombie-lore to a whole new level.

Now judging from the trailer and web site, we’re obviously not looking at much of a budget or high quality cinema. But honestly, the title alone is enough to sell me. It’s even better than Zombie Strippers or even Ninjas vs. Zombies.

The premise is about the same as any other zombie flick; a group of people needs to get from here to there without being eaten by zombies. A lot of screaming and blood will ensure I’m sure.

So again, while not a whole lot of love for the trailer, there are a couple of pretty cool shots (check out the background during the local farmer interview) and some decent gore effects. Director is influenced by such greats as Johnnie To, Wong Kar-Wai, Robert Rodriguez and Andrew Lau, so at least they have good taste and are clearly influenced by (good) Asian cinema.

Looks like the premiere already happened last month in Illinois, but you can get the DVD at the film’s website if you’re really excited about seeing some Fast Zombies with Guns. Check out the trailer below…

Thanks to “E” for the heads up!
