• Vancouver Forces Rescheduling of Oscars

OscarsAlright. So the city of Vancouver isn’t really responsible for the rescheduling of the Oscar ceremonies but an event taking place here next year is. The Winter Olympics have taken over the city and while thousands of people are looking to come into town for the event which kicks off in February of 2010, I’m looking for a way out.

In an effort to avoid falling further in the ratings, the Oscar organizers have decided to move the awards show up a few weeks to avoid having to duke it out for numbers with the Olympics which run through to February 28th. The new date for the festivities: March 7th.

The show’s new air date is giving members of the academy a little bonus in the form of an extra week to see the nominated films but really, does anyone care? It’s not going to change the nominations or the winners and it’s definitely not going to make the general public care any more or less about the dying awards show. This year’s was more fun to watch mostly because of Hugh Jackman and the help of the folks that came by and joined us in the chat but aside from that, this awards show seems to be on its last legs. At this rate, in a few years this is going to turn into Miss Universe: once a fun way to kill a few hours and now a pathetic, substandard excuse for entertainment.

Does anyone care about the move? Not likely. The Academy should really be less worried about the date and more worried about how to save the show by making it more viable for public consumption.

I for one would like to thank the city of Vancouver and the Winter Olympics Committee. I have not been too happy since they started holding the Oscars in February and would much rather see them back in March. Okay, the Oscars seem to becoming more and more irrelevant, but I still enjoy watching them!
