Other than Waitress, I admit to knowing very little about the writer, director and co-star of the film, Adrienne Shelly. Her untimely death in 2006 unfortunately overshadowed most of her work, including said sleeper, indie hit starring Nathan Fillion and Keri Russell.
While Waitress didn’t exactly make a lot of top ten lists, it was recognized for its rookie spirit and heartfelt charm. I saw lots to like in the film and plenty of potential for bigger and brighter things from Shelly. Sadly, I thought at the time we wouldn’t ever see that potential come to light after her demise.
Sometimes however, voices from the grave have a tendency to come back and give us a little taste of what might have been. Apparently Shelly’s widower, Andy Ostroy, has a script penned by Shelly just before her death and he claims it to be “her best script [yet].”
According to Ostroy:
“It’s a little bigger than some of her other work. If Adrienne’s previous movies were comedies with a little bit of drama, this is a drama with a little bit of comedy.”
Titled The Morgan Stories, it’s a multigenerational family drama that revolves around three sisters and follows them over the course of several decades.
So I’m definitely looking forward to more Shelly as I said, I thought Waitress really was a bright spark that showed so much promise to turn into a raging inferno.
And we’ll get a taste of more of Shelly’s writing sooner rather than later apparently; as, while I was researching the story, I came to find that Ostroy is actually just wrapping up production on another of Shelly’s scripts entitled Serious Moonlight, which should be released later this year (probably in a limited capacity). Serious Moonlight stars Kristen Bell, Justin Long, Meg Ryan and Timothy Hutton.

I’m excited about both of these. I don’t think Waitress made my Top Ten, but I’m sure it was in my Top Twenty. Also, Serious Moonlight is being directed by Cheryl Hines, who played Becky, the third waitress, in Waitress.
Cheryl Hines is directing!? That should be interesting. I really only know her as Mrs. Larry David. Never saw “RV” thank God.
