Surely this isn’t Cast A Deadly Spell?
That’s one film that I need on a proper DVD god damn it. Why HBO doesn’t get off their asses and release it when it has a huge well known cast and a hot director, Julianne Moore, Fred Ward, Clancy Brown and directed by Martin (Casino Royal) Campbell. Boggles the mind really.
Wow. Never heard of this, Swarez. Awesome. And Yea, I want to see that.
This screenshot is from a movie that didn’t get much theatrical release (as all of this directors work seems to be afflicted with not-great box office), despite a lot of print/media on the filmmaker, who is more famous for theatre than film. I think it got some love on DVD (as do a lot of the directors work…)
Cast a Deadly Spell is great. I recently caught up with it on HBO on demand and still found it a charming hybrid of genres. I have a theory about certain actors who dont get the credit or the work they deserve. Fred Ward was born to late, imagine Fred Ward hitting the ground running in the late 60′s, or any decade before the 80′s infact. He just has one of those faces. I loved Remo Williams as a kid also.
I’m a fan of Robert LePage (Possible Worlds is even more obscure and underrated than Code 46 – albeit, equally icy.)
Obscure and silly hint of the day. The film uses my favourite Henry David Thoreau quote in there. Uttered by my favourite on-screen magician. Yea. that’s a pretty terrible and narcissistic hint.
Leave it to a film-school grad to get this zinger. Indeed it is Shelagh. Although he is only in it for half of the film, Ricky Jay is GOD. Oh, and the Thoreau quote is “Beware of All Enterprises that require new clothes”
Plus a fabulous Campbell Scott, a playing-it-straight Steven Martin and several of the usual Mamet regulars.
The Hours? Reading always reminds me of Stephen Daldry.
And on that same note, is is The Reader?
I know it isn’t the film I’m thinking – but it might come up later in the themed week so I’m keeping mum.
Man, I miss Reading Week.
No, but I’ll say that the person opening the book is NOT HAPPY about the state of the pages.

I feel like I’ve seen this. Recently actually. Can’t for the life of me remember what from.

Le Confessionnal?
Total guess from the theatre vs film comment made me think of Robert Lepage.

Pleasantville?
A narcissistic hint – wow, that’s a new one! Still don’t knwo what the film is!
You’ve never heard of Cast A Deadly Spell Kurt? God damn, it’s probably the best H.P. Lovecraft inspired film ever made.
Dang. Nope. Not at All Swarez. But I’m happy to hop on board with GOOD Lovecraft adaptations. There are so many middle of the road attempts out there.
Back to the Quiz at hand. Here is a big hint.
That book does not contain The Process, the MacGuffin of the film.
Prospero’s Books?
The Greenaway film? Nope. This is a lot more mainstream. In fact it stars Steve Martin. Oi.
Evil dead?
The Spanish Prisoner. AMAZING film!

Definitely worth a look. Or 2.
