Glad to see there are a few fans of the French New Wave and Jean-Luc Godard out there. I’m always amazed just how well (relative to some of JLGs other films) this one has aged. Must be the ‘timeless cinema tropes with a dose of turning things on their side.’
The hint in the quiz text (above) is “classic posing”, a la poseur, which is what the movie is aiming for (that-is an aping of Humphrey Bogart) and an ‘on the run’ movie where the actual main character visits girlfriends rather than avoiding the law. Jean Paul Belmondo really does brings a level of intensity and “sexy-cool” to the role (despite his young age at the time), making this one of JLG’s more accessible flicks.
Another one I knew! This sunglasses thing is working for me. Belmondo is so awesome, even though Breathless isn’t my favorite JLG film (I like Band of Outsiders and Pierrot le fou more, even though I had to watch Pierrot three times before I liked it – but I also have a thing for Anna Karina, which works against Breathless).
The French New Wave is pretty much my favorite thing right now, but I still have so much to learn about it.
Love me some Belmondo. Not as big a fan of “Breathless” though…It’s amazing when you put it in its time period (the editing, etc.) and the opening and closing have lots of energy, but that whole middle section with Jean Seberg in the apartment drove me crazy…
I’ll take Belmondo in “Le Doulos” or “Le Magnifique”.
Bob, exactly. Groundbreaking and essential? Yes. But both JLG and Belmondo have done other stuff I like better. I just watched Le Doulos a month or so ago and loved it to death.
Could it be from Breathless?
Oh! That is what I was going to guess as well

Nice choice. I know what I’m gonna watch tonight
