It’s been a good few years since Sam Raimi has dabbled in directing horror (though he’s been a busy producer) but the director who both gained love and hate for his work on the Spider-Man franchise is finally returning to his roots.
When Drag Me to Hell was originally announced, I was pretty excited but everyone’s been pretty tight-lipped about the production and outside of a few images, we hadn’t seen anything from the upcoming horror film which is premiering at SXSW. With the film’s first screening only a few days away and a May release on the horizon, it was only a matter of time before the trailer hit. And here it is.
It’s not awesome but it is reminiscent of the cheesy 70s and 80s horror films. Add in the dooming orchestral score of the trailer and the aesthetic is totally working for me. Bloody hell, they’ve got Justin Long in there; I’ll be there opening night.
If you’re not going to SXSW, worry not. Drag Me to Hell opens on May 29th.

I’m still excited about it.
This looks like some old-fashioned horror fun. Lovin’ it.
I’ve fallen deeply in love with Justin Long, so this one’s a no-brainer for me…..
Heh. I think this is simply the curse of the GHOST-HOUSE PICTURES coming home to roost. Maybe the film is really campy and the trailer makes it look serious, so it’ll still be a good time. But maybe it will be glossy and stillborn. Either way Mother of Tears is looking better than this one. And I did not dig Mother of Tears.
Still. It’s Raimi doing ‘demon’ horror, so I’m there.
I don’t think this looks serious at all – it’s coming across as camp to me. And you’re right on the “Mother of Tears” vibe. I chalk that up to the old woman make-up and the music in the trailer.
And “Mother of Tears” was bad but also had the camp 70s horror going for it which I dug (to an extent). Movie still sucked, wouldn’t see it again.
yeah, kurt… this doesn’t look serious to me either? did you watch the same trailer? looks like it will be goofy and silly and cool.
I think what Kurt about it not looking camp is that it’s not all “Winkity wink wink, look at silly this is”
I hate shit like that.
@@ I think what Kurt about it not looking camp is that it’s not all “Winkity wink wink, look at silly this is”
ugh. I need to proof read better. My posts lately are a mess.
Besides Watchmen and Public Enemies, Drag Me to Hell is the one movie this year I am really looking forward to.
This looks hilarious/wildly entertaining! Why does that woman have staples in her forehead?! It stars Alison Lohman!
I see that one of the production entities on this is Buckaroo Entertainment. They seem to be a new one. They only have this and like four other slightly interesting upcoming productions on their cv. Who is behind this one? Anyone know? A google search gets a variety of hilarious results. I’m only interested because of the name of their company.
Add me to the list of proponents here. It doesn’t look amazing, but it looks like a bloody good time. Certainly better than that Spider-Man threesome of awful. Praise Allah Raimi is finally off of that shite.
“Spider-Man threesome of awful”
Really? I knew you weren’t a fan but I thoroughly enjoyed that franchise, particularly bits of the last one (the bits that fanboys hate – go figure).
Yeah, I really really do not like those movies. The second one is barely passable with Molina as the villain. Otherwise I hate all the actors involved (except Bruce Campbell of course), the villains are boring and the action is not only boring, but the same scenario in all three movies. Of all the super hero franchises that everyone seems to love, this is the most baffling one to me. The swinging around on a string is neat for about ten minutes, then I’d just rather take a nap.
this looks awesome. i love Sam Raimi. he is so cool.
ick, marina, hate hate HATE the third Spider Man, but the first two were very very fun and entertaining movies, the second in particular.
really cool, was about time he return to this. maybe another evil dead is coming?
i’ll make you take a nap if you ever trash spider-man again, you communist. A FOREVER NAP.
Instead of doing that…
please defend Spider-Man. What is it that makes it such a great franchise?
What is it that makes it such a great franchise?
The fact you don’t like it.
“What is it that makes it such a great franchise?

LOL
Seriously, I’m not familiar with the Spider-Man universe outside of the movies and a few episodes of the TV show (and whatever else has permeated into pop culture) and I liked the world Raimi created. I have some minor issues with a few of the villains, particularly in the third film, but I enjoyed all of the movies – especially the third one which had some seriously wacky, totally off-the-wall scenes (like the dance scene which is still one of my faves from the franchise).
I’m not a big fan of horror (but I’m working on it, I promise!), but the trailer is intriguing me – I do hope it’s on the campy side, though. Those seem to work better for me than horror that tries to take itself seriously.
And sorry, I can’t defend Spider-Man 3. I didn’t completely hate it, but it was more fun to mock than to actually watch. I even liked the first one better than the second, for some reason, though I think I’m in the minority on that.
andrew, i think instead you need to give better reasoning as to why YOU don’t. something besides that superficial explanation you gave above. look at Spiderman and Spiderman 2 on Rotten Tomates: 90% and 93% respectively. The proof is in the pudding and 9/10 people agree with us, so you do the explaining, hoss!!
What is “superficial” about my explanation? I don’t like Tobey Maguire and I don’t like Kirstin Dunst. Green Goblin was a horrible, boring, one-dimensional villain that really offered no challenge to Spidey and in part three there were so many villains (including Spidey himself) that they were diluted completely and again became completely devoid of any depth, intrigue or sense of danger.
I do like me some DaFoe and JK Simmons, but otherwise I just thought the whole mess is boring. Pop quiz: which of the three Spider-Man movies has the villain(s) dangling the damsel in distress from a tall building to lure Spidey into a trap as the climax of the movie? Trick question. Because it’s all three of them!
I guess I have the same problem with Spidey that I had with Iron Man, Hellboy, Incredible Hulk, etc. Is it really that fun to watch your hero have a 30 minute fist fight with a villain that is essentially the same character as your hero? Just slightly bigger or badder or some other slight advantage? Really? Is it really that much fun to watch a CGI character swing around from building to building for 20 minutes? Yeah it looks kind of neat, but otherwise there’s no emotional component there at all. I just don’t see anything original or fun about it.
And I don’t judge my enjoyment of a film (or even how good it is) based on what other people (sheep) think. I base my opinions and prejudices off of personal attachment or dissociation from a film. Because more people think it’s a better film than Synecdoche NY, Elegy, Rachel Getting Married, Hunger, etc. Does not make it so.
But PS – Spidey 3 is at 61%
you thought there was no emotional component to spider-man? they spend half of the first movie building up Peter Parker, making you both sympathize with him as a regular dork, the guy who can’t get the girl, the one that just can’t do anything right before they even delve into his super powers. considering it is a summer blockbuster superhero movie, i think it has plenty of emotional component. i think most of the critics agreed too. and most of the viewers.
i guess it is just different strokes for different folks. you are just in the minority.
and andrew, SM3 sucked HARD. that’s common knowledge.
nobody is judging your enjoyment of a film on others? it was just pointed out that you are in the HUGE minority if you look at critics and also what people voted on IMDb. a HUGE minority. the minority generally always gets stamped with having to give the defense in an argument, whether it is correct to do that or not.
p.s. i was only kidding about giving you a forever nap.
As if I needed any more convincing, Peter Martin says that “Raimi has made a joyful romp through his personal horror playground and come up with a very entertaining horror-comedy that gets back to the basics.”
