This was news to me, but apparently Steven Spielberg has been working on another HBO mini-series dealing with World War II for over a year now. Similar to his “Band of Brothers” series, “Pacific” revolves around three Marines who are caught up in the U.S. defense of the Pacific during the war. Apparently the entire series was filmed on location in Australia and will air sometime later during this year and/or possibly early 2010.
“The Pacific” is adapted from the memoir book of Eugene Sledge, “With the Old Breed” which was first published in 1981. The memoir is based on notes Sledge kept tucked away in a pocket-sized Bible he carried with him during battle.
.
Here’s the press release I found [via /film]:
“The extraordinary experiences of these men and their fellow Marines take them from the first clash with the Japanese in the haunted jungles of Guadalcanal, through the impenetrable rain forests of Cape Gloucester, across the blasted coral strongholds of Peleliu, up the black sand terraces of Iwo Jima, through the killing fields of Okinawa, to the triumphant, yet uneasy, return home after V-J Day.”

I haven’t even seen Band of Brothers. War movies/shows are not really my cup of tea and though I usually equate HBO with GOLD, I’m not really interested.
Myself, I really hope this is going to deliver.
i just creamed my trousers. i had no idea. BAND OF BROTHERS is breathtaking and i expect this will be too.
Band of Brothers is one of the greatest accomplishments in all of movie making. I heard about this probably a year ago, but forgot all about it. I’m stoked.
