I’m not all that familiar with Jim Jarmusch’s work aside from Broken Flowers but whenever I hear his name, I can’t help but think of “quality”. I didn’t even like Broken Flowers and though I’ve been curious about both Coffee and Cigarettes and Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (which was featured on the very first Movie Club Podcast show) I’ve yet to catch up with either film. Regardless, when I saw the name Jarmusch, I had to watch the trailer and I’m quite happy I did.
Shot by renowned cinematographer Christopher Doyle, The Limits of Control stars Isaach De Bankolé (a Jarmusch regular) as loner who is finishing up a job outside the confines of the law. Shot in Spain, the film is said to have “striking and varied landscapes of contemporary Spain (both urban and otherwise)”. Basically, the entire thing is pretty vague outside of the rest of the cast which includes Tilda Swinton, Bill Murray, Gael García Bernal and John Hurt; seriously, how could anyone say no to this? If the cast isn’t enough of a sell, this trailer should do it. It’s odd enough to leave you scratching your head but it’s also gorgeous and I already can’t get a few of these images out of my head (including the one above).
Focus Features will open The Limits of Control in limited release on May 22nd.
Trailer is tucked under the seat!

Wait! The only Jarmusch film you’ve seen is Broken Flowers? Damn girl you need to get yourself a copy of Down By Law, Ghost Dog, Night On Earth and Dead Man.
So basically his entire filmography? LOL
Actually, I do have a copy of Ghost Dog that I bought in prep for that long ago first episode of MCP but never got around to seeing it. Will have to right that (and the rest) soon (I guess).
Fuckin’ A. Jarmusch kicks ass every time at bat, Swarez! Marina. I thought you had watched it. You Should. NOW. ditto on DEAD MAN, that one has aged really, really well.
Stranger than Paradise: black and white, a static camera, a soundtrack of nothing but Screamin’ Jay Hawkins wailing “I Got a Spell on You”, deadpan humor. Somehow, it works!
Ghost Dog and Dead Man are masterpieces.
Dead Man is one of my favorite movies of the 1990s. gets better every time i watch it.
