• Canadian Film Preview

Usually, I wouldn’t go out of my way to share news on Canadian films opening on a particular weekend but this weekend, while people everywhere are getting ready to enjoy Zack Snyder’s adaptation of Watchmen (our review) (which I’m looking forward to take in as well), there are some other options for folks not interested in caped crusaders and as a bonus, it seems that there’s an abundance of Canadian films to go around. Here are a few of the notable screenings and openings this weekend.

    Vancouver

The Green Chain, Mark Leiren-Young’s drama about the battle between loggers and environmentalists starring BSG stars Tricia Helfer and Tahmoh Penikett, opens in Vancouver on March 6th. The director and cast will be on-hand for a Q&A and Saturday’s midday screening also includes a panel discussion with members of Greenpeace, The David Suzuki Foundation. More details at the film’s website and thanks to The 13th Colony for the heads up on the screening.

RiP: A Remix Manifesto Movie StillBrett Gaylor’s film RiP! A Remix Manifesto has been getting a lot of attention lately and it’s getting ready to open in Montreal on March 6th, followed by runs in Toronto (March 13), Winnipeg (March 18) and Vancouver and Calgary (March 20). However, if you’re in town and happen to be free this weekend our friends at DOXA something very special lined up. On Sunday, March 8th, the film will be screening at the Vancity theatre, complete with an after-party immediately after the screening. For details and tickets, head over to the website. Before all the action kicks off, be sure to check out the trailer and Dale’s interview with director Brett Gaylor.

    Across Canada

Pontypool Movie StillThe Joshua Jackson starring road film One Week opens across Canada on Friday, March 6th. I thought this looked great and general buzz around the film has been quite positive. Check out the trailer and look for it at a theatre near you!

Bruce McDonald’s awesome Pontypool (our review) also opens on March 6th in Toronto. The movie that I can’t seem to stop raving about will expand to Vancouver on March 13th. Be sure to check out the trailer and then stay tuned for it opening near you in the coming weeks. Also, be sure to stop by Row Three tomorrow for more gushing praise from the After the Credits crew.

  1. I still can’t believe that not only One Week but Pontypool as well is opening on the same weekend as Watchmen.

Ironically I saw both at TIFF so I’ll not be in those houses – although I’ve already reviewed am they are both great and Canadian in very different ways.

I’m really looking forward to RiP A Remix Manifesto, it looks very intriguing.
