My Bloody Valentine 3D One Sheet

Director: Patrick Lussier (White Noise 2: The Light, Dracula 2000)
    Screenplay: Todd Farmer, Zane Smith
    Producer: Jack L. Murray
Starring: Jensen Ackles, Jaime King, Kerr Smith
    MPAA Rating: R
    Running time: 101 min.

In a rare moment of weakness immediately after the Vancouver Canucks’ eighth strait loss on home ice (which I understand is the worst streak since the 1970-71 season), I managed to convince the husband to go to a late show at the local multiplex. I should have known that convincing him in moment of weakness would end poorly.

My Bloody Valentine 3D Movie StillThe choices for a late night film are slim around these parts but we had two options: The Uninvited or My Bloody Valentine which was screening in 3D. Husband decided that it would be “cool” to see the 3D debacle. Things started to go south when I used a $25 gift card to pay for our two tickets and still had to shell out $5. Did ticket prices go up since my list trip to the theatre? Doubtful and after asking a few employees we discovered that the 3D film is indeed more expensive (probably for the use of the 3D glasses which we stupidly returned at the end of the film). After the price induced minor heart palpitation we headed into the theatre. Little did I know that that heart flutter was the most excitement I was going to get for the next 100 minutes.

  • Hear the Roar in Bana’s Love the Beast Trailer

    1

Love the Beast Movie Promo StillWhen I think of Eric Bana the first image that comes into my head is that of the Hulk followed closely by Munich. The Australian actor has been keeping busy over the last few years but sadly, he hasn’t been in a whole lot of memorable films. I’m hoping that the upcoming The Time Traveler’s Wife will change that; I know that his forthcoming documentary is certainly a step in the right direction.

Love the Beast features Bana and his passion for all motorized, fast moving vehicles but particularly his 25 year old love-affair with his classic muscle car: a Ford GT Falcon Coupe. I’m trying very hard not to get giddy with excitement at the prospect of spending 90 minutes salivating over this beauty.

The film doesn’t simply document Bana’s love affair with the 600hp machine aptly named “The Beast”, it also documents his entry into Targa Tasmania Rally, widely considered one of the most difficult races there is, and the devastating event which took place on the 4th day of racing.

Car lovers, prepare to rejoice. I had goosebumps listening to the revving of this engine.

Love the Beast is scheduled to open in Australia on March 12th though no indication whether we’ll have a chance to see it o the big screen in North America. Thanks to Filmstalker for the heads up on the film and be sure to head over there to check out a whole lot of interview clips of Bana talking about the car.

  • Creepy Trailer(s) for Grace

    0

Grace One SheetI love a good horror film but it’s always a struggle to find something new and unexpected and sometimes we (or maybe just I) settle for mediocre fare. Last year I was surprised and impressed by how effective Bryan Bertino’s The Strangers (our review) was and it looks like 2009 will have its very own great horror film.

Grace premiered at Sundance a few weeks back and the folks who know horror have nothing but good things to say about Paul Solet’s first full length feature.

Based on his short film from 2006, Grace tells the story of a woman who, after discovering that her baby is dead, chooses to carry it to term. When she finally gives birth, the baby is miraculously alive but has an appetite for human blood (Ooooo! Vampire baby?). Devin Faraci has said that this is body horror “the likes of which we haven’t seen since the heyday of Cronenberg.” Those are some big shoes to fill but I’m hopeful that the movie doesn’t disappoint.

The film has been picked up for distribution by Anchor Bay who have yet to give it an official release date though from the clips I’ve seen and the positive reception, they’d be missing out, not to mention angering horror fans, by simply dumping it on DVD down the road. Here’s hoping we get to see it on the big screen.

The trailer and Sundance teaser are tucked under the seat.

  • Padilha Signs On for Sigma Protocol

    0

Jose PadilhaTrying to keep track of José Padilha’s projects is turning into quite a chore, one that will soon require a spreadsheet to keep it all straight. The award winning director of Elite Squad (our review), has already signed on for Marching Power starring Don Cheadle and a second yet untitled action packed project for WB. Now comes news that he has a third project on the go.

Based on the last finished novel from best selling author Robert Ludlum, The Sigma Protocol involves the story of a man on the run in Europe. The movie will apparently be updated from it’s World War II conspiracy and Nazis as a plot to include “the current economic climate and make the protagonist a Wall Street type who specializes in the economy of catastrophic events, known as “black swan events””.

At this point I’m interested in anything Padilha is involved with but I’m ready to start seeing some of these movies rather than just writing about them being announced. Let’s hope something gets moving along and ready for release over 2009.

  • The Soul Detective Short Film Featuring David Lynch

    2

V2 CinemaV2 Cinema’s “Think Tank” series has made for interesting watching. Since the release of the first short a few months back, the group has put together a number of interesting short films featuring discussions with important figures in the entertainment world including Wim Wenders’ and Philip Glass. Now they’ve released the final entry into their series and once again they continue to impress.

The Soul Detective is a nine minute project written and directed by Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro, the short film is about a detective who tries to enter a man’s mind before he dies and all his memories vanish. Perhaps most interestingly is how the short also features an interview with David Lynch discussing the process of making films – and it feels like it belongs in the story.

It’s a beautiful looking short and the story is interesting but I must admit that Lynch was the biggest draw and with a nine minute running time, you can’t really go wrong. It’s also worth while to check out the other entries in the series, particularly What Are You Looking For? which features beautiful imagery with a discussion with composer Philip Glass. You can see that film, along with all of the others, here.

Short film is tucked under the seat.
