    Splice Movie Still

I know that among the back entries there must be some news about Vincenzo Natali’s next film, the Guillermo del Toro produced Splice, but for the life of me, I can’t find them..

The film stars Sarah Polley and Adrien Brody as scientists who defy the rules and forge ahead with dangerous testing in which they splice together human and animal DNA. The result is, as the film’s tagline states “a mistake.”

I’ve loved Natali’s work from the early days, first seeing his work at VIFF but over the years it seemed as though people had sort of lost interest in the talented director (the first screening of Nothing at VIFF a few years ago was poorly attended) but Splice seems to be catapulting him into the mainstream limelight. And really, with this cast and these new images it’s little surprise.

The folks at Bloody Disgusting have a number of stills from the film and they look fantastic. Initial stills suggested that the creature designs would be interesting but there’s something very wrong about the almost human face which makes it’s creepy as hell. I can’t wait to see video footage.

Splice will apparently open in September 2009. Be sure to check out all the stills at BD.

Everything I’ve seen from this production screams “QUALITY!”

I know Cypher had some narrative issues, but it had fabulous production design, ditto on the pressed-for-budget CUBE. I’ve never managed to see NOTHING, but I’d like to. I think it was only a matter of time before all the elements came together for Natali and I do indeed wish him as much success as possible with SPLICE. I’ll be first in line!

I’m always looking forward to a Brody project. Sarah Polley I like too. I hadn’t heard anything about this until now, but it looks awesome.

I don’t know much about Natali, but his segment in Paris, je t’aime was great.

I’ve had some issues with his films but overall, he has a solid filmography. You should definitely check out “Nothing” Kurt – it’s pretty funny and features an entire portion of the film shot on white. Looks easy enough but during the Q&A he talked at length about how difficult it was to shoot “nothing” and a nothingness that is white rather than black – especially a nightmare for lighting. I don’t like it as much as “Cube” but it’s solid.

Really looking forward to this and I’ll be right there with you on opening night.

Cube is fun on so many levels, and as a real bit of trivia, one of my favourite Sci-Fi authors (Englishman Alastair Reynolds) referenced quite explicitly it in one of his novellas which was kinda cool.
