• Celebrate Valentine’s Day With a Canadian Film

ValentinesIt’s Saturday night. You and your partner have had a nice dinner and are getting ready to get all comfy cozy on the couch. You’re flipping through the channels and end up watching some pathetic excuse for a romantic flick. She’s in pain, you’re in pain; no hanky panky for anyone. That can all be avoided by a little planning and by planning what I mean is that all you have to do is go to the video store with this handy list and prepare for the romantic build up that will likely end with fun for everyone. All of this thanks to some great Canadian film.

The folks at the First Weekend Club have put together a great list of films that may not initially jump out as romantic but that will do the trick every time. To make it all that much better, there’s enough variety on the list to guarantee something for everyone.

    1.
FIDO – a love story between a woman (Carrie-Anne Moss) and her zombie (Billy Connolly)
    2. Away From Her – a man’s (Gordon Pinsent) love for his wife (Academy Award winner Julie Christie) even as she struggles to remember him
    3. Numb – A romance between a beautiful woman (Lynn Collins) and a man (Matthew Perry) suffering from depersonalization disorder.
    4. Partition – A young muslim woman (Kristin Kreuk) and a Sikh man (Jimi Mistry) fall in love against all odds
    5. Young People Fucking – A heated title & some hot couples in the throes of passion
    6. Everything’s Gone Green – a good-natured slacker (Paulo Costanzo) attempts to win over the object of his affection (Steph Song) by quickly gaining flashy commodities through a money laundering scheme.
    7. Mambo Italiano – Oddball son of Italian immigrants shocks his family when he comes out of the closet and moves in with his lover
    8. Snow Cake – A tender friendship between an autistic woman (Sigourney Weaver) and a man traumatized after a fatal car accident (Alan Rickman).
    9. Red Violin – a violin at the center of passion, love & history
    10. Passchendaele – A romance between a Canadian soldier (Paul Gross) and a nurse (Caroline Dhavernas) set against the backdrop of World War I

I’ve got more than my share of these on the shelf. No trips to the video store required!

I want to see Passchendaele, but the commercials I’ve seen are interesting marketing. The first I saw was all battle scenes. It looked like the greatest war epic and guy movie ever made. The second commercial I saw was nothing but romance scenes, clearly targeting women. From the commercials, you’d never know it was the same movie. I’m hoping its more the first commercial than the second.

And being it came to mind, where’s Getting Married in Buffalo Jump on the V-Day list? Nothing says Canadian film like that.

Never even heard of it! Will have to add that to the ziplist!

As for Passchendaele – I still haven’t seen it but if I remember from Dale’s conversation, it’s much more the love story than the war epic.

  3. I love that Fido is on this list! Numb is on my too see list, only heard about it recenlyt.

I just did an untraditional Valentine’s Day film list and it has a bunch of Canadain titles (Blood & Donuts, My Bloody Valentine – original, Ginger Snaps) because nothing says romance like some vampires & such.

I saw your list but haven’t commented yet but kudos on the Arthurian list, particularly King Arthur which I also love – it’s a great take on the legend. And major soft spot for Tristan + Isolde.

  5. Thanks Marina! I think Arthurian films are one that almost anyone can enjoy. I was so surprized how much I enjoyed Tristan + Isolde, and King Arthur was a lot of fun and has such a great cast.

It’s strange that there isn’t a romance or even romantic comedy being released this Friday considering the timing and all.
