Stone of Destiny Movie StillEarlier this year, while at a FWC event to promote the Whistler Film Festival, I had the opportunity to speak with Charles Martin Smith about his new film. The director of The Snow Walker and Trick or Treat was excited to be screening his new film Stone of Destiny, a film about a heist “600 years in the making”.

The comedy, which premiered at the Edinburgh Film Festival earlier this year, tells the true story of a Ian Hamilton and his group of friends who reignited Scottish national pride in the 50s with a trip to England to steal back the Stone of Scone. The film, which features an excellent cast of up and comers including Charlie Cox (who was excellent as Tristan in last year’s Stardust), Kate Mara, Billy Boyd and Robert Carlyle is a whole lot of fun (at least for the last half which is all I managed to watch) and I was deeply disappointed that I missed the first half of the film; from what I saw, this is a fun, well acted romp through a bit of history which is so ludicrous it has to be true (and by all accounts, it is!).

Stone of Destiny opened in the UK earlier this month and will open across Canada on February 20th. I look forward to the opportunity to seeing it again – in full this time!

Trailer is tucked under the seat!

  1. I believe this film closed TIFF this year. I’ve seen the trailer in front of a few movies recently. It looks kind of goofy, but I like the cast, particularly Kate Mara, so I might check it out when it comes to town.

  2. The trouble they get themselves into is pretty goofy but the over-the-top moments actually happened. It’s weird that they ever managed to get the stone back considering the constant screw ups!

  3. Does anyone know when Stone of Destiny will open in the U.S.?

  4. I vaguely recall a story about the film finding a US distributor but I can’t track it down. That said, when we spoke with the director a while back, they were working on a US distribution deal so I’d expect that’ll be coming later in ‘09.

Look for that video interview to go live later today/tomorrow!
