Happy Birthday to us: Row Three turns One!

November 22nd, 2008
Written By: Kurt Halfyard

Happy Birthday to us. It’s been a year today since we launched the site. This was to serve two purposes: 1) A lot of us were running our own sites and all covering the middle-ground between the multiplex and the cinematheque, and one place to foster community amongst like-minded cinema-goers that fostered ongoing discussion (we felt) was missing. 2) Fortune and Glory.

While #2 is likely only to come from watching Harrison Ford ride lava roller coasters in India, we are pretty happy with our first year of existence in the great and wonderful electronic ether. This is your place to get constructive on what we’ve been doing right or what we should be doing.

Onward to year two.

  1. Well for one thing, don’t ever post another animated gif like that. I couldn’t actually stop watching it and I think I’ve damaged my retinas now…

Great site folks. I love the mix of different contributions and regular features. The biggest compliment I can give is that you’ve already added considerably to my “movies to see” list.

  3. Bob, I don’t think we post enough animated gifs like that. I’ve been pushing for us to include that Van Damme gif in our site header, but I haven’t been able to convince all of our contributors that it would increase our readership. How naive.

Anyway, it has been an interesting year and I look forward to seeing what year two brings.

  5. “watching Harrison Ford ride lava roller coasters in India”

And that’s really what it’s all about isn’t it?

    lol

  6. More JCVD. In my estimate, you can never have quite enough. Other than that, maybe you could get Sean Connery to come out of retirement. Neither of those should be too difficult for you to complete before the end of year two.
    Cheers!

  9. Congrats on the first year milestone! I can’t think of anything I would change, although I would like to see more reviews of classic (i.e. pre-1970) films.

  10. Congratulations myself. My favorite movies can now be appointed “favorites around these parts” and my opinions can now be validated by the silent consent of strangers.

    God I love myself.

  11. Nothing says lovin’ like a little bit of Henrik-asshat-ery.

  12. Ha ha ha! Thank you Kurt for reminding us all of the splendor that is ‘ZARDOZ!’ Just in case you were confused by the trailer, the synopsis is described as follows:

In the far future, a savage trained only to kill finds a way into the community of bored immortals that alone preserves humanity’s achievements.

This is what we need more of in the film industry! Somebody take a chance! I smell a remake.

  13. Nah, I cribbed it from over at Twitch where Todd found a high res version of the teaser and dropped it into the Brightcove player. Just serendipity that you brought up Mr. Connery. But that film is definitely John Boorman at his most unrestrained (and that is saying something considering Excalibur and The Exorcist II). Considering those three films were made back-to-back to back, he obviously had a lot of credibility to and leeway after Deliverance.

  14. And someone pointed out that the title comes form wiZARDofOZ which kinda sorta gives some insight where the craziness is coming from.

now if only someone would make a film version of ALICE IN QUANTUMLAND, c’mon the new Bond title alone should pave the way for this little bit of geek-insanity.

  15. Jesus Kurt that is a massive spoiler.

Comment by Matt Gamble — November 23, 2008

  16. With all the craziness on display, can your really (REALLY?) spoil ZARDOZ? The fact that it even exists is spoiler proof. That is like spoiling DEAD ALIVE or SWEET MOVIE. It’s really besides the point isn’t it?

Andrew, the spoiler purist is probably on your side though.

  17. Happy Birthday to Row Three! Awesome site, keep up the great job! :)

  18. I don’t think Zardoz can ever be spoiled. I’m still traumatized from my first viewing - at 15 in English class. Yes, the honours English teacher showed us this under a shrowd of secrecy - I’ve never been the same.

And yeah, Happy Birthday to US! Here’s hoping for many more years of arguments and discussion!

  19. What a coincidence, I actually watched Breakin’ last night (the source of the animated gif), in all it’s cheesy goodness.
