Sita Sings the Blues Movie Still

Every year there’s one or two films at the local film festival that you miss that, whenever you talk to someone else, they’re seen and loved. For me, that film was Nina Paley’s Sita Sings the Blues.

The film tells the epic Indian tale of Ramayana to the 1920’s jazz vocals of Annette Hanshaw and was produced and animated by Paley herself over the course of 5 years using her home computer.

Fellow podcaster and movie maven Colleen of 353 Review, who is not generally an animation fan, loved the film and as mentioned, everyone else who I spoke to who had seen it said nothing but good things.

The film is still making the festival rounds (check for a screening near you) and is also playing at the MoMa as part of their Best Film Not Playing at a Theater Near You series. In addition to the trailer, the website features a whole lot more information on the film, including a handful of other eye popping stills.

I’m hopeful that at some point, I’ll be able to catch up with this on DVD because it looks like a whole lot of fun!

Trailer is tucked under the seat!

  1. I’m generally a fan of these DIY one person animated features that usually take years to finish. I highly recommend Christiane Cegavske’s Blood Tea and Red String (http://twitchfilm.net/site/view/dvd-review-blood-tea-and-red-string/)

  2. Gah! Played here last week at some film festival I had no idea was even in town (thanks for the heads up Gamble… sigh).

At any rate, this looks like a stoner’s wet dream of a movie. Beautiful and trippy to some extent.

On an unrelated note, Tekkenkinkreet (sp?) showed up at the store yesterday. It is in my hold bin. Will hopefully get around to watching it this weekend.

  3. Ooooo. I really liked Tekkonkinkreet. It’s a beautiful little film. I saw it twice and still don’t quite understand the entire story but LOVE it none the less.

  4. The film has numerous different graphic styles to it. The best part of the film has to be the three bickering shadow puppets that do the naration of the traditional story. Just Great.
