Exactly. I just finished reading the first chapter of the book.
Perhaps, right now Herzog would be the right mentor for me. It's only when we are pushed to extremes that our true potentials become clear. Herzog is my survival guide for the time being in this industry.

and to take it back to music you could say a lot of the greatest, most genius avant-garde jazz follows this, ie Cecil Taylor, to prove Herzog wrong on his example.

Andrew, Wild Blue Yonder nearly brought me to tears. Given, I was very fragile at the time, but there are some truly sublime and very emotionally penetrating moments.

Herzog is absolutely right about cinema, but I think he's wrong when he talks about piano playing, how it's not the same. It is the same for any art form. The less you know, technically, the better off you are. Though I think to take this a step further, the greatest artists are the ones who are the most technically proficient but then sort of un-learn and work from an intuitive place, ie someone like Lynch.

I watched "Wild Blue Yonder" last night. It's an interesting idea and a valiant attempt, but I wasn't able to slog through the whole thing. I'll attempt it again another time.

Herzog on Herzog is possibly my favorite read of 2008, the guy has more impossible tales than Forest Gump.

The most articulate director out there? And probably the greatest stories I can think of relating to any filmmaker (Herzog & Kinski, eating a shoe, getting shot during an interview, Ed Gein, etc). This reminds me, I need to watch Stroszek still. I might pop that in today.

Herzog speaks truth.

"academia is the death of cinema. It is the very opposite of passion."

This is exactly right.
