Dirty Thirties Marathon

Harrison Ford finished filming Crossing Over with director Wayne Kramer before he ever even began filming Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull. Yet, over five months after Indy Jones’s release, there was still next to nothing released on Crossing Over - only a small handful of photos, no poster, no trailer, not even a set release date.

The film is a multi-character drama focusing on illegal immigration in the United States that co-stars Ray Liotta, Ashley Judd, and Alice Braga. The more I heard about it, the more it seemed like it would be something in the vein of Crash or Babel, just a couple years late to the party. When the studio kept pushing it back and pushing it back more, I didn’t take that as a good sign, although since it was the unpredictable Weinstein brothers doing so, it was impossible to know the problem.

Finally though, we have the trailer. It looks a lot less like Crash or Babel than I initially anticipated, although it is certainly clear that it is going to be a message movie. Which can be fine, as long as it doesn’t slap you across the face with it over and over.

Since this is Harrison Ford and I would follow Mr. Ford off of the edges of the Grand Canyon if he led me, I’m rooting for this to be a well-made film embraced by critics and movie-goers alike - and who knows, maybe by some minuscule chance, we’ll get to see Harrison up for some awards this year (or whenever this sucker is released). Chances are, this won’t be the film to do that at all, but at 66-years-old, I think this kind of movie - and by that I mean a film driven more by the acting than the action - is a step in the right direction for Mr. Ford.

  1. I can’t wait to see Jim Sturgess in something better than Across the Universe and 21. I’m skeptical about this one though. It has potential, but I think it does look a lot like Crash as far as theme and style are concerned. And Crash was … well I’m not going to be the one to start that debate again. We shall see …

  2. I like Sturgess and agree - he’s shown great potential. He’s in the upcoming “Fifty Dead Men Walking” and one of the best things in the movie. It’s too bad the rest of it is awful.

  3. I will watch Harrison Ford starring in a reading of Encyclopedia Britanica, Part 1: A-M.
Hopefully he throws some good punches and stares really dramatically. He has one of those death stares. It’ll burn your soul if you look in his eyes too long.

  4. I too will watch this because of Jim Sturgess. Across the Universe was the most original, creative piece of work anyone has done in long time. Julie Taymor is the very best at her art. If it wasn’t for his portrayal of Jude in Across the Universe, Jim Sturgess would not be known. He did an incredible job in both Across the Universe and “21″. I don’t think most people understand how hard it is to bare your soul to the profession of acting for the entertainment of the public. It is incredibly hard and humbling.

  5. Ford is looking a lot more “Get off my lawn!” than “Get off my plane!” in that pic.

  6. I’m one of he guys who really liked “Across the Universe.” I agree with “kare” in the above comment. Visually speaking, that movie was highly creative and ambitious. I also liked the music a lot too. I have no problem with cover songs - especially in a “stage-play” sort of way.

And I too really liked the cast and especially Jim Sturgess. I think he could be a big star if he picks the right roles. He could go the way of Brad Pitt if he plays his cards right. He was great in 21, even if the movie sucked.

  7. As for Crossing Over, wow does that look overly cheesy and melodramatic. But I admit along with everyone else here, the cast has already clinched my money. I’ll see anything and EVERYTHING with Harrison Ford in it. And hey, I like Babel and Crash a lot. So yeah.

    • The Definitive BayFormers 2 Review 2009/06/24
io9 says Transformers 2 is a surreal mind fuck in the same spirit of Le Chien Andalou, just with a "squillion" more dollars. "Transformers: ROTF is so long, you'll need to wear adult diapers to it. But the movie's pure celebration of the primal urge, and unfiltered living, will make you rejoice in your adult diapers. You'll relieve yourself in your seat with a savage joy, your barbaric yawp blending in with the crowd's screams of excitement."

This is why Away We Go struck the right notes with me. Nothing is more polarizing in this day and age in the suburban world than child raising philosophy. It's more dangerous to bring it up in polite company than Religion or Politics. And despite being rather smug about it, Away We Go does it a lot of the right nerves for expecting parents
