Collins is a very talented writer, and Road to Perdition translated flawlessly to the big screen. I, for one, am confident that the following films will be successful... at least, as it pertains to the writing and vibe. As for a Michael, Jr. - I am a big fan of Ryan Gosling and Joseph Gordon Levitt... I feel either could pull off the role perfectly, both in terms of looks (in terms of age) and the acting chops. I am not sure that they look similar enough to Hoechlin, but, given that this is several years late, I am not sure that that really matters. I will certainly be checking out these sequels.
