If Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist was a sweet attempt to show the unpredictability and power of relathionships and love at first sight, Last Chance Charlie looks like a similar movie but for the 50+ generation.
Dustin Hoffman plays Harvey, a man who happens to be in London for his daughter’s wedding and though it’s a happy occasion, things are not so rosey for him. He loses his job and his daughter breaks the news that she’s going to ask her stepfather to give her away. Things are not looking good but in a moment of desperation, Harvey ends up at a pub, having a drink and striking up a conversation with a beautiful stranger named Kate (Emma Thompson). The two spend the day together going from one magical moment to the next and ending up at the wedding reception. It’s no night in New York searching for Fluffy but it certainly seems to have a few of the same high-points.
Both Thompson and Hoffman are great actors in their own right but neither has appear in a lead role in some time and it’s nice to see two greats paired together though I’m not sure this would have been my first choice for a project. Still, it’s a solid looking trailer and the two are certain to get a bit of attention. It’s also worth noting that in the span of a few months, we’ve seeing two romantic stories targeted to an older audience. Perhaps this is a sign that Hollywood has realizer the market potential for romantic dramas tailored to the baby boomers. Here’s hoping out of these films we see a few good teamups.
Last Chance Harvey opens on January 23rd.
Trailer is tucked under the seat.

Jeez, when is the last time Hoffman played it straight? It could be Ben Braddock forty years later. Looks like a solid drama though. Love Hoffman and can’t go wrong with Thompson, so we’ll see.
saw dusting hoffman on charley rose pushing this film. it looks wonderful for us “50 plus” crowd. I want to see it with you jane doe.
When this was nominated for Golden Globes I was like… wth movie is that? I’d never heard of it. Now it’s the trailer in front of pretty much everything (and shows too much!).
It does look charming though, with some great acting to boot.
