At the risk of getting a whole lot of flack, I’m going to share something with you. I wasn’t a big fan of Casino Royale. Sure, I agree that Daniel Craig makes a great Bond. I also had a good time watching the film until it went sideways in the last 20 minutes. I understood they had to add that to set up why the character is the way he is but it felt tacked on. To make matters worse, they bring on Mads Mikkelsen and then give him very little to do.
It wasn’t a complete loss. As mentioned, Craig was bad-ass and the film focused more on the story than the gadgets – a nice change from the previous few Bond films starring the fabulous Remington Steele (to this day when I think of Pierce Brosnan in anything I think of that show).
The second installment in this new incarnation of the long running franchise brings back Craig in the title role and this time, he’s out for revenge. Alongside him we have Olga Kurylenko as the sexpot and the fabulous Mathieu Amalric as the bad guy. Thankfully, the trailer also suggests that Amalric actually has a role to play rather than simply an extended cameo. Here’s hoping.
I’ve been lukewarm about the pictures, behind the scenes videos and teasers that have been released to date but I’m happy to report that I really like this trailer – particularly the opening shot of Bond driving in the desert. Beautiful.
Quantum of Solace opens November 14th.
Trailer is tucked under the seat!

you have to be the only crazy person in the world who feels that way about what is easily the best Bond movie, Casino Royale.
i break up with you, Marina
Does it help that I’ve never been a big Bond fan to begin with? I don’t really want to end our long and happy marriage over it…
nope, i still break up with you forever
I’m about to enter into a deep depression because I’ve been dumped. So much for VIFF coverage. I’ll be in bed, eating chocolate ice cream out of a tub.
Wow! This looks FAR OUT! Love the shot of the camera falling through multiple layers of glass and wood with Bond and bad guy. ANd you’re right, here’s hoping we see lots of Mathieu Amalric.
Another gorgeous Bond girl. This is one of the hottest IMO.
This is gonna be awesome. Cannot wait. Casino Royale was a perfect action movie.
And agreed Andrew, I think Olga Kurylenko could be one of the best looking women on the planet.
I’m pretty psyched about this too. I’ve always been a Bond fan, since I was little. Casino Royale was great – an excellent way to invigorate the franchise. One of the coolest things about this new one is that it’s a continuation of the last story. After Connery’s movies it’s kind of hard to connect with Bond – stories seem half-assedly thrown together to feed off of male fantasies and somewhere along the way touch on all the requisite Bond touchstones. The last one at least did away with most of the gadgetry and allowed some focus on decent characters. My only concern with this new one is that it gets bogged down in too much talk and romance. Bond needs to be always be tough – I’m a little concerned by the title and some lines in the trailer that this will focus too much on the emotions going inside Bond’s head.
I think it’s good to focus on what’s going on inside Bond’s head for two reasons:
1. None of the other Bond films did. Ever. And if they did, it was inserted, like stump said, ‘half-assedly thrown together to feed off of male fantasies and somewhere along the way touch on all the requisite Bond touchstones.’ We’ve now seen, and I hate to use the cliche, ‘The Bond origin’, so we know where he’s coming from.
2. It is a continuation, picking up pretty much right where Royale left off, so we now have to see how Bond deals with the Vesper situation.
The first teaser was unispiring for me and I really wasn’t too keen on Mr. Forster taking over from Martin Campbell (who I think is the best Bond director to date), but this trailer looked absolutely amazing. Judy Dench finally gets to show how ridiculously talented she is as M (something she hasn’t really had a chance to do since ‘GoldenEye’).
Color me excited!
I thought Casino Royale was boring and this looks like more of the same, but something that’s incredibly entertaining is seeing all these danish actors playing the bond villains! Even though Jesper Christensen is so above this nonsense, seeing him being set up as such an iconic villain is brilliant.
Funny. I think the Danish actors are all really boring and that everything else is really entertaining.
