First Clips from Aronofsky’s The Wrestler

There is a whole lot of buzz around Darren Aronofsky’s new film The Wrestler. Starring Mickey Rourke as a washed our wrestler, the film which recently premiered at Venice, is being praised left and right with Rourke’s performance being touted as “iconic.”

Before the film premiered, it looked like it could be a while before we had a chance to see it but considering the praise it and Rourke are getting, I would not be surprised to hear it was snatched up and hurried for limited distribution to meet the Oscar cutoff. It’s a guess but certainly not unexpected or unheard of.

Until this point, we haven’t seen much from the production but the boys at CHUD have uncovered a short video which features some extracts from the film intercut with interviews with Aronofsky and Rourke. It doesn’t give much to go on but I was interested before and I’m even more interested now. I don’t recall if this film was on the list for either John or Kurt but you may also want to keep tuned to Film Junk’s coverage of the festival because this one is definitely on Greg’s watch list.

  1. Good clip, I can’t wait to see this. Always been a fan of Mickey Rourke, glad to see him making an impressive comeback.

  2. I can’t wait to see this either. I am a huge fan of Aronofsky’s Requiem for a Dream (what a phenominal film that is, get’s me every time - just stunning) and Pi is a great little experimental film (which reminds of Eraserhead both because Aronofsky and Lynch had really low budgets on both plus they are both in low-grade black and white). Funnily enough I didn’t care for The Fountain (I know Kurt is going to disagree with me there); there was a lot of amibition there but to me it was a big mess of a film. The Wrestler is an interesting project for Aronofsky considering his past films, but I have every confidence in the man.

  4. No amount of scrubbing could ever get Rourke cleaned up enough for the stuffed shirts at the Oscars.

  5. He better get started. As predicted the film has been picked up by Searchlight and they’ll be making an Oscar run for Rourke:
