2009 Oscar Pool

Sean Penn in Gus Van Sant’s Milk Trailer

September 3rd, 2008

I know very little about Harvey Milk other than the fact that he was the first openly gay man to be voted into a seat of power in the US and that he was the mayor of San Francisco.

I can tell you that I’ve been very curious to see what Gus Van Sant’s Milk would look like, especially with a cast that includes Sean Penn in the lead role along with James Franco, Emile Hirsch, Josh Brolin and Diego Luna in supporting roles.

I was never quite sure if the film would focus more on the individual or the political career but by the looks of this first trailer, most of the film’s focus is on the political campaign. We’ll have to see how it plays out. One thing I will say is that I love, love, love this trailer.

Is it just me or do I smell Oscar nomination for Penn?

Milk opens December 5th.

  1. I want to hate this due to it’s blah-blah-blah-look-how-politically-sensative-we-are feel, but want to see it regardless. However, I do want to punch the wig right off Emile Hirsch’s goofy head.

  4. Why didn’t TIFF get this??? This is definitely gala-worthy, I would have paid $40 to see this instead of some of the crap they brought here instead.

Looks like 2009 is going to be a pretty gay year at the movies. Between this and Jim Carrey falling in love with Ewan McGregor in February, it’s definitely going to be an interesting first quarter…

  5. Wow, I was expecting to hit play and for this to look awful but I gotta’ say this is shaping up to be great. Penn looks fantastic in the lead role (the supoporting cast is also very solid - btw did I hear Penn calling Brolin ‘dad’?). This has got Oscar written all over it.
