One of the premieres at TIFF this year is Danny Boyle’s (28 Days Later, Sunshine) Slumdog Millionaire; based on the best selling novel “Q&A” by Vikas Swarup.
The story is of Jamal Malik, an 18-year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, is just one question away from winning a staggering 20 million rupees on India’s Who Wants to be A Millionaire? Arrested on suspicion of cheating (after all, how could an 18 year-old from the streets know so much?), he tells the police the amazing tale of his life on the streets which somehow manages to relate to each question he’s answered correctly. With 60 million people watching, will Jamal correctly answer the big money question?
Thanks to worstpreviews, we get to see a couple of images. They’re nothing overly special, but considering the stellar imagery of Boyle’s previous films, we’re probably in for a real treat and the story line sounds super intriguing.
Pics are under the seats…
Danny Boyle

Yikes, I was posting about this at the same time that you were. I actually hit “Publish” and realized you had done the same.
What I love about Danny Boyle is both how great of a director he is and how each of his films are so different from one another. 28 Days Later is one of my all-time favorite horror movies. Millions was a beautifully crafted, family appropriate film. The first three-fourths of the sci-fi thriller Sunshine was fantastic. And who doesn’t love the 90s drug classic Trainspotting?
This should be fantastic. At its core, it is a love story, and I have no problem admitting I like a good story about love lost and how people react to it (i.e. Marquez’s Love in the Time of Cholera).
I’m a big Boyle supporter for the same reason Jonathan – all his films are so different.
I’m looking forward to this and if I’m remembering right, I also recall reading something about a November release. If someone can confirm/correct that, it would be much appreciated!
November 28th, I believe.
I’ll likely have a ticket to SLUMDOG, but it conflicts with MIRACLE AT ST. ANNA. The joys of TIFF scheduling.
Given the modern UK Chameleon directors, I’ll take Michael Winterbottom over Danny Boyle.
But I do like Boyle’s films quite a bit – usually the first 2/3 of ‘em are better than the last third though. Boyle generally has issues with pacing and endings…..but damn, I love his visual style.
SLUMDOG for me had no conflicts so I’ve got it in my schedule.
this reeks of Millions so I am staying away
You know, I should have hated Millions with a passion, but something struck me with just the right chord on that film, even the super sappy/false ending never bugged me like it should have. Guilty pleasure, I guess.
TIFF ticket exchanges anyone?
Tickets I am exchanging:
Afterwards Sun 7th 3:15pm – 1 ticket
Wrestler Tues 12pm – 2 tickets
Synecdoche Sept 11th 12:15 pm – 1 ticket
Pontypool Fri 12th 5pm – 1 ticket
Acolytes Sept 10th 6:45 pm – 1 ticket
Tickets I want
Wendy and Lucy Sun 7th 12:45pm – 2 tickets
Of Time and the City Sat 13th 6:30pm – 1 ticket
Rocknrolla Sat 13th 2:45 pm – 1 ticket
Disgrace Sat 13th 10 am – 1 ticket
rot, you are failing as an intellectual if you exchange Synecdoche or The Wrestler for Rocknrolla
Actually I am failing as an intellectual but it has nothing to do with this exchange. Maybe you haven’t tried to schedule 20 some films into nine days but believe me there tends to be very little wiggle room for what films fit what slots. Synecdoche and Wrestler are extra tickets, I am definitely going to those films, Synecdoche is probably my most anticipated of the festival. I think I need Rocknrolla on the last day of the festival if only as some contrast to the sort of stuff I will be seeing.
Henrik, did you see Flame and Citron, was it any good?
I guess if the tickets are spare it makes much more sense.
I did see Flame and Citron and it is dreadful. I think Ole Christian Madsen deserves jailtime for kidnapping a story like that and history itself, to serve his own petty ambitions. Making a bad movie is one thing, but as it is now, nobody will be able to make an actual movie about the Flame and the Citron, which should be punishable.
what about Kristian Levring’s Fear Me Not? Another entry from Denmark at the festival that I am intrigued by.
I don’t know what that is. Probably had a different title when it came out here, but I’ve never seen a film by Levring.
well I got it on my schedule now and might review it here… apparently it is disturbing.
Danish films are often disturbing in one way or another. Anyone see OFFSCREEN?
In Danish its called Den du frygter, and it is the director that did The King is Alive. I don’t know him but it sounds interesting.
I met Nicolas Bro when he was in Iceland shooting The Good Heart and he said that when Offscreen screened on some festival in the states a guy who teaches FBI agents asked to show the film in his class cause apparently it was the most accurate rendition of a stalker the guy had seen on film.
Note That Slumdog just got a distrib/release date: Nov. 28th

Offscreen falters in its closing minutes, and really, really starts to resemble IRREVERSIBLE, but I do enjoy watching the Bro/Boe team. Heck I was a fan of Allegro, which amusingly the shoot of which is self-contained within the ‘real’ aspects of OFFSCREEN. Funny.
