TIFF Section?

by John Allison
August 15th, 2008

I would like to get all of your opinions on a couple things concerning TIFF (and any other festivals we might be attending).

Do you want us to provide in depth coverage of the festival?

If yes, do you want us to provide previews of each movie that we are interested in? I can’t see us previewing every movie simply due to time constraints and if it doesn’t interest us we just don’t want to
expend the energy covering it.

If yes, do you want us to chat about life during the festival? Perhaps you will get to read about me breaking down while I attempt to make use of my 50 movie pass. ;)

If yes, would it you like to have all of our TIFF coverage to be part of the main site or would you prefer it to be a separate section of the site?

If you do not want us to cover TIFF, why?

Finally, is there anything else you want to see covered concerning festivals in general?

Thanks for your help. I’m planning on adding a bunch more previews to the TIFF section today but if everyone is really interested in the festivals I can always move it over into the main site.

  1. John if you are doing 50 films there will be no writing at all from you. Unless of course you choose not to sleep.

Those going who are interested in seeing each others calendar should try gmail calendars, it was a great asset last year for a bunch of us, you can see your own schedule and then overlay the schedules of other people and see where they overlap. TIFFreviews.com was great for making the adding of films effortless with a feature on his site but I am not sure if he is doing it this year.

Me personally I love to hear the experiences surrounding the films, it should be like standing in line and hearing about other people’s experience at the festival.

  2. I figure I’ll probably be between 30-40 even though I have the 50 pass. Here is my plan for each day. Get up around 9-10 in the morning, write till 12, leave the hostel catch a movie either at 1:00 or 3:00 depending on schedule. Then catch a 7, 9 and midnight show. The nights where I want to meet up with people I’ll drop either the 7 or 9 showing.

I also guess I’m asking if everyone wants the site flooded with previews with trailers and links to reviews (when they already exist) for each movie right here on the main site.

I love the gmail calender thing. I just set up johnrowthree@gmail.com to be public so anyone can see it. I’m not sure how it works yet but it is public.

  4. Oh and I don’t want to side track the discussion about what to post here on Row Three but if people are interested we should set up a meet and greet thing one evening or afternoon. I’ll actually be in Toronto with both Tuesday 2nd and Wednesday 3rd completely free.

  5. Argh. Wish I could make it this year, but alas… the Los Angeles trip and the Ford Ranger dying on me has really drained my bank account.

TIFF coverage is certainly a must though! I’ll leave it at that.

  6. There are the usual Twitch Gatherings at The Imperial Pub at 10pm a few nights during the festival. Usually a couple pints before the midnite shows. Often filmmakers and festival programmers and various web and print writers gather there. It’s always a solid chat/discussion when it happens.

  7. So I basically want to try to avoid 9:00 showings then. Shouldn’t be a problem and I’d still be able to get my 3-4 movies in during the day/night.

  8. Wow, you’ll be in before the fest? Those dates would work here. Looking forward to hear more!

  9. Woot, 18 days to TIFF! Film list is out tomorrow, I’m excited! I’m definitely up for as much coverage as everyone has time for. I’ll likely be setting up a Flixster list to track my reviews, and I’ll look into the gmail calendar too, I’ve never tried that before.

  10. The gmail calender worked like gangbusters last year. Across 4 folks who I attended the fest with.

  11. I’ve talked with Ray at Tiffreviews and he is doing the gmail calendar thing again, and I am going to try and help him out with it so that it will be ready. On his site attached to every film will be a gmail calendar button that will automatically add the film to your schedule, and once you have your schedule you can import the schedules of others and see where they overlap.

  12. Wow, that would be cool to be able to import the picks through clicking! I wasn’t really looking forward to putting in 40 or so films even as much as I like data entry - time is of the essense!
