Re-tell the story by all means, revise, re-vamp, re-splendor but in my opinion at the very least stay true to the central aims of the author, or risk losing everything that is 'good'. I find it hard to believe it'll be a big seller or even make any sort of splash. Unless they manage to get a big name attached to direct - then the general population may pay a little more attention.
