I didn’t even know that an Underworld 3 (Rise of the Lycans) was in the works. While I dig me some vamps and lycans (werewolves), I’m not sure where this franchise has to go. Part two was not great, while part one (if I remember correctly) was just barely serviceable.

Meanwhile Kate Beckinsdale seems to agree with that sentiment and has opted out of part 3. While this is unfortunate news, it looks like an equally appetizing actress will take on the role of Selene: sweet sweet Rhona Mitra.

Graduating from her TV career and now developing a somewhat reputable presence in Hollywood as an ass-kicking leading lady after her role in this past spring’s terrific Doomsday (R3eview), I think this newest film might possibly just have some potential. Not following the story arc of before, but instead deciding to go in the direction of apparently sort of a PREquel and also switching up directors to a rookie: first time director, Patrick Tatopoulos (IMDb); who apparently is no stranger to set-design, make-up and effects; which is obviously something the Underworld world thrives in.

So while I’m not necessarily looking forward to this, I can at least be hopeful. Ok, on to the pics…

    The great Bill Nighy

A horse is in the movie too.

    More Rhona

Thanks to JoBlo for pointing me in the right direction.

The third one is a prequel so Bekindale’s character isn’t involved, so that’s the reason she’s not in it.

I’ve enjoyed the two films as decent entertainments so I’m going to check out the third one for sure.

Len Wiseman directed my band’s music video by the way, won an award for it here in Iceland which is still sitting on my shelve at home.

Uggh. This franchise is as soulless and ineptly produced as the usual Paul WS Anderson stuff (exception, to some degree is Event Horizon). But oi, do I not get the $$$ love for these movies at the box office. I was at the (so called) world premiere of the film, hosted by Wiseman, Speedman and Beckinsale and almost fell asleep during the screening, and in the end, left more than a bit bitter that he had such a simple and great little genre concept and let it slip painfully thru his fingers…

I guess I’m not a fan of Wiseman and Co. But I’ll admit that somehow he made Diehard4 a guilty pleasure (against all odds with the PG rating and side-kick)
