Shane Meadows’ Somers Town Trailer

by Marina Antunes
July 24th, 2008

A while back I gushed over Shane Meadows’ This Is England while posting some information about his new film, a drama titled Somers Town which features Thomas Turgoose, a runaway, who befriends a Polish boy and the two of which fall in love with the same girl.

The film had already played a few festivals to many an accolade and was getting ready to open in the UK but we still hadn’t seen a trailer - until now. Thanks to a heads up from our good friends over at Quiet Earth, we bring you the great looking trailer to what will likely be a fantastic film.

Somers Town still doesn’t have a North American release date.

  1. Another one I saw at the Edinburgh International Film Festival last month - and along with Red it was one of my favs that I saw (check out my review at given website). Much like Mike Leigh with Happy-Go-Lucky, this is Meadows in a lighter mode. It serves as a good introduction to his style though before you watch heavier stuff like This Is England or Dead Man’s Shoes.

(Plus Turgoose, who was the little guy from TIE, is BRILLIANT here. He’s one to watch in British cinema, mark my words)

  2. So Red is actually good? (I love Brian Cox as much as the next guy, but the picture seems strained…) And a question to anyone out there who has seen “SHOT GUN STORIES,” the famiily revenge drama with Michael Shannon, is that one any good?

And, I absolutely love Dead Man Shoes. Great film.

  3. Yeah Red is VERY good. Don’t let the trailer and poster throw you off - they make it look like a typical revenge thriller but there’s so much humanity and soul to it (largely helped by the performance of Cox) that it makes you forgive any moments which may seem cliche. And look out for Tom Sizemore - good to see him in a film like this:P

  4. (Also Robert Englund is in there in what must be his first non-in-a-gory-horror-flick-just-because-I-was-Freddy-Kruger-role in a good few years:P)

  5. @Ross - Robert Englund was in “V” - sure sci-fi, but he was playing extremely against type back then…and that was the same year as Nightmare on Elm…

  6. Yes I remember that (due to my parents’ love of the series:P) but I was referring to the roles in films where he’s just in it because of the character he famously played, as an attempt to get a “Hey, wasn’t he Freddy Krueger?” from anyone who actually watches them - exampl;es 2001: Maniacs, Tobe Hooper’s entry into the Masters of Horror Series called Dance of the Dead (which ain’t half bad actually), Hatchet, Behind the Mask (awesome) etc etc.

  7. Yes it’s pretty bad that Englund only seems to get roles in films made by horror fanboys and are usually meaningless cameos. I’d love to see him in a proper none horror role.

As for Somers Town. It’s Meadows and Thomas Turgoose. Nuff said. I’m there.

  8. @swarez,

well in Red, even though it’s a minor role, at least it’s NOT a horror role. I welcome that, definitely.
