Screen Shot Quiz #84

by John Allison
July 24th, 2008

Here is a quote from a review for todays screen shot.

XXX XXX has pretty much regurgitated the same film; YYYYY YYYYY is a diluted mockery of its prequel, lacking any emotional poignancy and gritty suspense. However if one were to analyze this as a standalone film, then it remains far from a complete disaster. XXX XXX has crammed enough style and charisma to sustain interest but these ideas should really have been saved for a completely different project. XXX XXX have presented the disc with tremendous care and respect.

Personally, once I figured out what the director was going for I really enjoyed it.

  1. Infernal Affairs II?

  2. Nope but it is the right area of the world. I’ve mentioned this one on a previous podcast.

  3. I’m guessing that this is a Johnnie To film. It can’t be triangle because there are no prequels to that, but the give-away sentence is “enough style and charisma to sustain interest” which may apply to John Woo, but since I’ve seen all of Woo’s big stuff, I’m guessing it is his main successor.

  4. That would probably be a good guess seeing how I have a Johnnie To fixation. :)

  5. Okay another clue. The first one had Andy Lau in.

  6. This probably won’t help but the two characters are riding bikes in the screen shot.

  8. The Sequel

  9. Unfortunately there is no such movie.

  10. Hard Boiled?

    Comment by Andrew James — July 24, 2008 @ 3:39 pm

  11. Sorry it is not the imaginary sequel to Bullet in the Head nor Hard Boiled.

The story is about a cop and a master criminal playing a game.

  12. RUNNING OUT OF TIME 2

You know, Leslie Cheung was up for the Ekin Cheung role (dude in the right). I have a pre-production promo somewhere with him on the poster image.

And I think that the Lau Ching Wan’s cop character just transformed into the MAD DETECTIVE…

  13. Thats it, I am now going to rewatch Mad Detective tonight and yup Colin is right is is Running out of Time 2. The first movie is a fairly light hearted but with a bit of emotional impact crime thriller. Andy Lau plays a guy with terminal cancer who sets up a game of cat and mouse with a very smart detective for some reason. The movie is definitely fun. Running out of Time 2 takes the premise way overboard in a good way. The “bad guy” is playing the game with the same detective as in the first movie but its done less seriously.

There is a chase scene in the second one that just goes on for ever and it is pretty brilliant in a fun way. At one point the cop even stops for ice cream while chasing after the “bad guy”.

  14. Oh and if you still haven’t seen any Johnnie To you really need to start delving into Hong Kong’s hardest working director. The best place to start is with Exiled.

  15. Oh and nice site Colin. I’ve just added Kung Fu Fridays to the links on section.

  16. Nice to see you lurking around these parts Colin. Kudos on the stellar Midnight Madness line-up this year.
