Brody, Weisz and Ruffalo in Brothers Bloom Trailer
If you still haven’t seen Rian Johnson’s modern noir Brick starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, I’m just not sure what you’ve been waiting for. That film is a brilliant take on the noir film and though I’ve never been a big fan of the genre, it was difficult not to enjoy Johnson’s story of mystery, murder and intrigue.
For his second film, Johnson has decided to take on something a little lighter in tone. The Brothers Bloom stars Adrien Brody and Mark Ruffalo as con men who have made a life for themselves swindling millionaires. But these guys don’t just steal, they take pleasure in setting up and executing complex cons. For their last bang, the duo put together a team to pull the wool over the eyes of Rachel Weisz, a millionaire who collects hobbies. Yes, you read right: she collects hobbies (you must check out the trailer - it’s hysterical). Unfortunately for them, things get complicated when they fall in love.
I have to admit, this is not what I expected for Johnson’s follow-up but I’m happy to see that he’s not sticking to one genre or look. Unsurprisingly, this looks wonderfully entertaining and I look forward to seeing Brody and Ruffalo playing off of each other.
The Brothers Bloom opens October 24th.
Trailer is tucked under the seat!

You should be watching BRICK, Marina. It really is a great little film, and is (surprisingly) compulsively re-watchable.

Oh, and I love the ‘perspective’ of the credit type-face in this trailer! That has been happing a lot since PANIC ROOM, but it’s pretty snazzy in this trailer (maybe because it matches our little colour scheme here…)
And did anyone actually recognize Rinko Kikuchi? She’s a long way off her performance in Babel!
Cool to see that Rian Johnson has gotten together such a winning cast. And I adore con-man flicks when done well. This one looks fun.

Dude. I’ve already seen it! I’m commenting on those who haven’t! They need to get on that ASAP!

Yes, indeed. Apparently I can’t read.
Everyone else go see Brick!

@ “Everyone else go see Brick!”
See what I meant, the pope. (Giggles).
Anyways, we’ve probably all seen it.

@Rusty. That is true. (The seen it part). At one point someone joked that this site was becoming the Joseph Gordon-Levitt fan club or something to that effect…
Personally, I remember following the production of Brick from a very early stage and building expectations up to a point where they were extremely unlikely to be met. Yet the film met them anyway. And good on R. Johnson for that. I’m looking forward to the goofy zaniness in Brothers Bloom.

Kurt, the pope thing isn’t meant as an insult. If anything, Martin Luther is the most insulting and that was self applied by Mike Rot. It’s uncannily fitting however.
I am also looking forward to Brothers Bloom.

Inspired by Dirty Rotten Scoundrels?

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels rip-off. Still, looks like it might be some fun, although maybe not so funny; just fun. Not a big Weisz fan however.
But nice to see Rinko Kikuchi getting some more work/love.

Oops. Missed Dale’s comment. Yeah.

I’ve got a soft spot for much of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (http://kurtscomment.blogspot.com/2004/12/kbt-presents-dirty-rotten-scoundrels.html ). Has anyone seen the original version of the film with Marlon Brando and David Niven. Perhaps Brothers Bloom is more aiming for that territory than the Frank Oz remake.
Either way, I have a soft-spot for this type of movie, and the cast tickles my fancy. I’m so there for this one.

Yeah, total man crush on JGL. Brick is easily one of my favorite movies ever.

Nice to see some love for the ludicrously UN-mentioned (:P) Brick. Wouldn’t go as far to say one of my favouriet movies EVER but it’s certainly a fantastic little gem of one. I’m actually surprised it hasn’t got more Doonie Darko-esque cult fans out there. Then again maybe there is and they’re just not as outspoken:P

Brick is one of those recent movies like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang that I’ve watched a dozen times, because every time somebody is at my place and tells me they haven’t seen it, I have to pop it in.
Anyway, just watched the trailer and this looks FANTASTIC. Rian Johnson has a long, long career ahead of him.

That’s actually a good idea for a possible feature on RT - “forgotten recent gems”. I know Dave does his (fantastic) section Hidden Treasures which is kind of similar but this could be a more specific.

Brick, Sexy Beast, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang are more like ‘cult items’ than forgotten Ross.
Actually Scott Tobias is doing a fantastic series over at the Onion AV Club on just this - http://www.avclub.com/content/feature/the_new_cult_canon_wet_hot

@Kurt,
you’re probably right. Still you catch my drift - these cult-esque flicks (Donnie Darko, Brick etc) are a big part of the reason I love movies so much. The type of flicks you can forgive gaping flaws in lieu of other aspects you just latch onto for some unknowable reason.

Ross, check out the Vampire movies I recommend in the Twilight thread.
