Cowboy Bebop Goes Live Action

by Marina Antunes
July 23rd, 2008

Cowboy BebopIt’s an odd movie news type of day. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that Comic-Con kicks off tonight or maybe it’s just odd luck but alongside the news that “The Magdalena” film is on it’s way, there’s also news that a popular anime is in the works for a live action adaptation.

Thanks to Dale, I’m a few episodes into “Cowboy Bebop“, a Japanese anime about the adventures of a group of bounty hunters traveling on a spaceship aptly named the Bebop. Sound vaguely familiar?

It’s a mighty fine series and at the moment, I’m reminded that I should really get around to seeing the rest of it and with this announcement, the time is ripe.

The project is being spearheaded by Erwin Stoff, who has also produced The Matrix, Constantine and A Scanner Darkly, and as the Film Junk boys note, Stoff is also the agent and manager of Keanu Reeves. You do the math. What I want to know is which character they’ll have Reeves play. My money’s on Spike Spiegel.

At this point, I’m anticipating the announcement that a live action “Death Note” movie is also in the works. Mark my words - it’s likely coming.

And for the hell of it… in completely unrelated but mildly interesting comic news, it’s also been announced that Peter Berg of Friday Night Lights and most recently Hancock (our review) fame, will be directing a Hercules movie.

  1. OMFG, I’m not sure whether to be thrilled or pissed!

KR could only play Spike. How about Vin Diesel as Jet?

If I had my druthers, I’d have preferred a mini-series where they’d have time to develop the characters. Hope they don’t screw this up.

  2. “Vin Diesel as Jet” I say that’s ingenious casting. Seriously. I hope Stoff is reading this.

  3. good lord. how about Vin Diesel stays far, far, far away from this! and Keanu Reeves for that matter…

those two in the same movie hurts my brain

  4. I’m not keen on Keanu but I’m ok with the idea of Diesel involved with the project, especially as Jet. Maybe as I dig a little deeper into the show, someone else will jump our as an obvious choice.

  6. KR has the Spike look and I suspect could do an ok job. Kevin Bacon comes to mind as a better choice, except he’s probably too old. And believe it or not, I think Jim Carrey could pull it off (think Eternal Sunshine, Man on the Moon). I think Anton Yelchin would have been the inspired choice.

And Faye, some actor is going to have a lot of fun with Faye. Which 20/30 something actor with a body to kill for has the chops to pull off Valentine’s attitude! A young Kim Cattrall would be perfect.

Which child actor would you get to play Edward?

Let’s hope the director is a jazz buff. I don’t think it will work, otherwise, regardless of cast.

And Marina, you might want to finish the series sooner rather than later. I suspect spoilers of the TV series will be inevitable.
