Bloody Hell. Magdalena Goes Big Screen

by Marina Antunes
July 23rd, 2008

The Magdalena Comic CoverI‘m not a happy camper right now.

For a few years now there have been talks that Top Cow’s best selling comic “The Magdalena” was in production but I’d given up any hope that they’d actually pull through and put together anything other than a sub par project. This made me happy. I didn’t want to see one of my favourite comics defaced by some crap shoot of a movie. Sure, I’ll always have the comics but I’d be forced to see the film which would make me angry and perhaps in turn, take away some of the enjoyment of re-reading the comics.

It’s an interesting character. Unlike typical comic book heroes/heroines, “The Magdalena” doesn’t have an on-going series. The character has had two limited runs of comics and made numerous appearances in a load of other Top Cow comics but that’s it. One of the things which has really sold me on the series, apart from the great storytelling and excellent artwork, is that it is a limited series so I haven’t spent years trekking to the geek shop.

The character is said to be the daughter of Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene, a supernatural defender of the Catholic Church who uses the Spear of Destiny to fight evil. It’s all pretty over the top but I’m all about the ass-kicking chicks not to mention that the added mythology works for me.

So just as I’ve pretty much forgotten that there was ever even talk about the comic going to the big screen comes today’s announcement that Jenna Dewan has been cast in the title role. I’m sorry. Jenna who? What the heck is going on? I thought the project was on hold indefinitely?

The only good thing coming out of the news at the moment is that Luke Goss (who was pretty awesome as Prince Nuada in Hellboy II: The Golden Army (our review)) has signed on to star as Kristof, an agent of a secret organization that has been the guardian of the lineage because, you know, ass kicking women need protection. A second bonus: a director has yet to be attached which means there’s still hope that something cool could come of this if they get the right person in the driver’s seat.

  1. Heh, ass kicking women don’t need “protection”, but everyone could use a good wingman!

  2. At this point, I’ll take what I can get. And if that means Luke Goss in a tiny role (which will likely be expanded for the movie) so be it.

I’m also assuming they’re only using one of the thee Magdalenas. It’ll be interesting to see if they take a story from the comics or just take the character and create a new ark (would make more sense).

  3. Marina, you have my sympathies. I Adore TANK GiRL, and although I actually thought Lori Petty did an admirable job at playing an impossible charater, the movie was so off base on so many levels, it sucked! Where was the pure physco bitch cake, fun loving, beer swilling, kanagroo shagging, destuctive whirling dirvish with a kick ass dress style…

I did like the whole Doris Day obsession…sigh!

  4. I love the Tank Girl movie. It was loopy fun. It also had a great soundtrack and a kooky cast. I especially liked a mousy miss Naomi Watts .

I also thought the Portishead shower was pretty memorable.

  5. @Kurt
I think i was just a little to close to the subject matter. I have never been a comic book kind of girl. Much like my feelings on most N.American animation, I am just not interested. Tank Girl did interest me, and it was an obsession of mine for a while. the movie wasn’t that bad, and I too loved the soundtrack, it just wasn’t what TG was inside my own head
