Screen Shot Quiz #80

by Kurt Halfyard
July 20th, 2008

A distinctly different kind of ’superhero’ film. OK, that is probably of more of a red herring than a clue. Nevertheless, this is a great little debut film from a young and talented director.

  1. Gattaca, if I’m not terribly mistaken.

  3. Way to suck at guessing movies Cinexcellence.

Maybe you should change your name to Cine-good try.

  4. I knew that one… so does this mean you have actually seen George Washington now? whats thy opinion?

  5. Rusty’s been drinking the surly-juice, but he is absolutely correct on George Washington. Been starting to go through all of DGD’s films in prep for the (admittedly oddball for him) Pineapple Express.

I’d always heard this one compared to Days of Heaven (cinematography, voice-over), but really, the film felt just as much similar to Charles Burnett’s KILLER OF SHEEP, and even a little tiny bit ‘Stand by Me’

    Next up: Undertow.

  6. I loved the pacing and the mood in George Washington, it had that ’slow endless summer’ feel to it (a la ‘Y Tu Mama Tambian’), I guess seeing All The Real Girls recently (and getting a whiff of Malick off that picture) prepared me for that, this would have been a shock had I encountered this as the feature debut of a 25 year old writer/director.

  7. Also, I can highly recommend Todd Rohal’s 2006 ultra-indie THE GUATEMALAN HANDSHAKE (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0422366/ ), which plays like a dada-ist version of GEORGE WASHINGTON, and not surprisingly is produced by David Gordon Green. It has the same level of quality cinematgraphy and ’short-story’ / elegiac pacing. it is just a little ‘weirder’

  8. I enjoyed Green’s recent film, Snow Angels (is that the title?). Very subdued, but well done.

  9. ‘Subdued but well done’ seems to be his modus operandi, although the Pineapple Express seems to be a divergence. I’m looking forward to Snow Angels as well.

  10. :)

Compared to Days of Heaven? George Washington magically rises to the top of my NetFlix queue…
