Middle of the Row - Time to Pick Some Movies
The majority have spoken and we will be covering David Cronenberg in the next episode of the Middle of the Row Podcast. The other director’s will be covered in later shows. Thanks everyone for giving their input and now we need more of your input.
What we need now is for all the readers and contributors here to pick in order of preference their top 5 movies for us to cover from the following list:
- Naked Lunch
- Rabid
- The Brood
- Scanners
- The Dead Zone
- Crash
- Videodrome
- The Fly
- Dead Ringers
- eXistenZ
- Spider
- Eastern Promises
- A History of Violence
Just for fun the five I would most like to talk about are Crash, A History of Violence, Dead Ringers, Spider and eXistenZ.
I will rank the movies according to the number of votes each one gets. You should rank the five in order of preference as the higher the preference equals more votes. Please number your picks from 5 down to 1 with 1 being your most wanted.
Voting can take place till Monday July 7th.

On Canada Day no less.

5. Naked Lunch

A History Violence: Everyone is going to vote for this piece of trash and mark my words an indepth look will expose this film as the pointless, dumb, poorly constructed bit of obviousness that it is. It will not withstand scrutiny.
Havent’ seen the others.

I added Naked Lunch in. I don’t want to really get into my opinion of HOV yet but I think that the argument wouldn’t totally one sided.

I’m loving all the love for “The Brood”. Really loving it.

@ “I’m loving all the love for “The Brood”. Really loving it.”
I still haven’t seen that one. I’ surprised that AHOV isn’t getting more votes. Did I over estimate it’s popularity or maybe people feel there isn’t much left to be said about it.
No love for Shivers.
Comment by Rusty James — July 2, 2008 @ 5:20 pm
Yeah, The Brood is one of my favourites, plus I’ve done a whole load of reading on that particular film so it’s one I love to discuss. As for AHOV, I think folks maybe have just had enough of that one for the time being and though Eastern Promises is up there in my favourite of Cronenberg’s films, it’s been discussed fairly thoroughly and it’s still pretty fresh considering it only came out last year.

oliver reed simply rules in The Brood. and the feral kids in their snowsuits are creepy…..but the main image [which I won't spoil] is gruesome in all the right ways. The back-story of Cronenberg’s divorce certainly clear up a lot of stuff in how the film came together, in the same way that David Lynch’s unplanned pregnancy sheds a lot of light on Eraserhead.
Comment by kurt — July 2, 2008 @ 7:32 pm
I hope The Brood makes it. I haven’t seen any Crone prior to Brood. So from my incomplete knowledge, it seems important in his history as possibly his first movie with some significant psychological/emotional depth. Marina, seeing as you’ve read a lot about it I’m especially interested in your thoughts, but this should probably wait until the proper discussion thread.

“The back-story of Cronenberg’s divorce certainly clear up a lot of stuff in how the film came together, in the same way that David Lynch’s unplanned pregnancy sheds a lot of light on Eraserhead.”
Exactly. In one of the books, I think Cronenberg on Cronenberg (?), he speaks at length about the effects of the divorce and the huge role it played in The Brood.

Is there anything about Cronenberg’s filmmaking style that defines him as distinctly Canadian? This is something I’ve wondered and never had an answer to, being that I am not Canadian nor have I had much experience with The Great White North.

Hehe. I suggest you check out a essay I wrote a while back. There are a few nuggets here:
