Screen Shot Quiz #67

by John Allison
June 30th, 2008

I mentioned this movie a few weeks ago and that made me want to watch it again. So my plan tonight is to revisit this.

  1. Nice Shot. I think because I never read the source material that I enjoyed this more. Less to nitpick, more to enjoy the game cast and stunning visuals like that above.

Probably due for a revisit myself as I only saw it in the theatre.

Too many other movies out there at the moment….

  2. I’m stumped. Although I feel like I’ve seen this one.

  3. Big Fish?

    Comment by Andrew James — June 30, 2008 @ 12:03 pm

  4. Nah I don’t recognise it from Big Fish, Andrew (although it still might be, don’t hold me to that). I’m gonna guess, despite me not having seen it, - the remake of Around The World in 80 Days?

  5. Big Fish, Around the World in 80 days….Nope, don’t count on it.

    Comment by Kurt Halfyard — June 30, 2008 @ 12:30 pm

  6. I’m going with Marie Antoinette though I don’t remember a balloon ride. Whatever it is, it’s definitely something i need to check out.

    Comment by Marina Antunes — June 30, 2008 @ 1:06 pm

  7. Just got back from shopping… damn I like holidays and nope you are all wrong so far. I’ll give a hint. It is based on a book.

  8. League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

  9. Much better balloon:

  10. sorry that is not it either Stump. I’ll give another clue… this one probably isn’t needed but its historical fiction.

    Comment by John Allison — June 30, 2008 @ 1:39 pm

  11. Wild Wild West.

    Just kidding.

I figured it for Around the World. If it ain’t that, I’m stumped.

  12. How about the fact that it is a love revenge story.

    Comment by John Allison — June 30, 2008 @ 1:54 pm

  13. Count of Monte Cristo?

    Comment by Ole — June 30, 2008 @ 2:13 pm

  14. Oh, that was an easy one. Ole is right. From a terrible, awful, dreadful, juvenile, painful, sickening, disgusting, disturbing, vomit-inducing adaptation of a brilliant book. Go read the book!

    Comment by Jonathan — June 30, 2008 @ 2:40 pm

  15. You really need to break away from the movie has to be as good as a book thing. I forced myself to do it with LOTR and I was able to like the first movie. Until I was able to do that I wasn’t able to enjoy the movie. And yup, like Jonathan confirmed it is Count of Monte Cristo.

    Comment by John Allison — June 30, 2008 @ 2:43 pm

  16. I knew I had seen it. I liked it too.

    Comment by Andrew James — June 30, 2008 @ 3:13 pm

  17. Dude, John. I rarely ever have a problem with separating movies from books.

Except when the movie has NOTHING in common with the book thus stealing its name.

    Comment by Jonathan — June 30, 2008 @ 3:25 pm

  18. Jonathan,

how about with what is one of, if not probably, THE LEAST faithful book to film adaptations ever - The Shining? I swear only the family, the hotel and the horror element are there in the film from the book, the rest is COMPLETELY changed. Everything from the room number to the look of Jack, the scenes with the twin girls was added (they were mentioned in the book but the “come play with us” scene wasn’t there), the ending was totally different. Heck even the weapon Jack uses changed from a roque mallet in the book to an axe in the film (for obvious reasons:P). And yet it’s one of THE best films that has been adapted from a book. Strange…

    Comment by Ross Miller — June 30, 2008 @ 3:34 pm

  19. Tom Bombadil is shit. That’s right I said it.

    Comment by Matt Gamble — June 30, 2008 @ 3:53 pm

  20. Ross, I’m a hypocrite, what can I say?

    Comment by Jonathan — June 30, 2008 @ 3:58 pm

  21. Lol I didn’t mean to call you out on it:P I was just curious if that was an exception to the “rule” ie. whether you like The Shining in spite of it being nothing like the book.

    Comment by Ross Miller — June 30, 2008 @ 4:02 pm

  22. Nah, nah - I just like to give John shit for liking The Count of Monte Cristo. We all blast certain movies for certain things and give other movies leeway for the same reasons. Just human nature.

I’ve actually never read The Shining, although I’ve heard that often and Stephen King himself doesn’t care for the movie.

Naturally, it usually depends on A) if you read the book or watched the movie first and B) how close you hold the book to your heart.

    Comment by Jonathan — June 30, 2008 @ 4:09 pm

  23. It was one of the first King books I read and its FANTASTIC. But the movie isn’t any worse off because of that, having said that I saw the movie first so…

And yeah King doesn’t like Kubrick’s version, and remember the TV movie he made himself? Yeah - it just goes to prove that Kubrick was a filmmaker, and King should stick to writing books:P

    Comment by Ross Miller — June 30, 2008 @ 4:18 pm

  24. I agree with Jonathan about liking and disliking movies but I will also turn the argument around a bit and want everyone to consider this. If the Transformers movie wasn’t called Transformers everyone would likely not be so pumped about it. So in my mind all the people who love Transformers should do the exact same thing I suggest Jonathan does and that is ignore the original source material. That is the only way you can get a true opinion on any movie.

    Comment by John Allison — June 30, 2008 @ 4:58 pm

  25. “ignore the original source material. That is the only way you can get a true opinion on any movie.”

Words of truth, John, words of truth…

I personally don’t take the book really into consideration as far as how good of a movie it is. However I do still comment on the differences even if I don’t hold it against the movie itself. It’s inevitable that differences are going to niggle away at you but as far as a movie overall it shouldn’t affect your opinion of how good it is, at least in the interest of fairness.

    Comment by Ross Miller — June 30, 2008 @ 5:03 pm

  26. So in my mind all the people who love Transformers should do the exact same thing I suggest Jonathan does and that is ignore the original source material. That is the only way you can get a true opinion on any movie.

    AHEM!

Now, the making of a good compilation tape is a very subtle art. Many do’s and don’ts. First of all you’re using someone else’s poetry to express how you feel. This is a delicate thing.

    Comment by Matt Gamble — June 30, 2008 @ 6:38 pm

  27. Watch In The Company of Actors if you get the chance. Cate Blanchett and Hugo Weaving talk a little about adaptations, and how theater is a living, breathing entity so there will always be changes, drastic or not, from the source material. Cate says that the Western world is too conservative in that sense.
