First Quantum of Solace Trailer

by John Allison
June 30th, 2008

I‘m going to out myself as a huge and I mean huge James Bond fan. I’ve read several of the books but for me it is the movies that count. There has only been one Bond movie that I did not thoroughly enjoy and that is Thunderball. Yes, that means I even enjoyed the later Brosnon ones where technology got way out of hand and also the Roger Moore where humour got way out of hand. I know I’ve got a serious case of nostalgia going on and that I have a hard time recognizing what is wrong in each movie but so what everyone needs something they gush about.

So you can bet that I’m pretty damn happy about the new Quantum of Solace trailer that has just come out. I really enjoyed Casino Royale and I can now say that I really like the look of this new trailer. Daniel Craig may not be at the level of Connery yet but he sure is approaching it and after one or two more Bond movies he may very well become my favorite Bond.

  2. I enjoy every original cast star trek movie.

  3. I’ve never been a big Bond fan and I liked Casino Royale but it didn’t exactly blow me away. Last week a 10 second clip was released (lame) that I was not impressed with so I wasn’t expecting to really like this trailer but I admit it surprised me. Bond gone rogue agent? That’s some pretty good stuff right there. if they can up the intensity of the first film, this will definitely be a winner.

  4. I am not a fan of the Bond series (and to be honest I haven’t seen ANY before Brosnan took on the role - be gentle with me!:P) but I LOVED Casino Royale. Unlike like you Marina it DID just blow me away. I think the Bourne series gave the Bond one a severe kick up the ass and put it on the right, more gritty track.

And this is a great early teaser for the film. Nice casting choice having The Diving Bell and the Butterfly’s Mathieu Amalric as the villain.

  5. Marina - Bond also goes rogue agent in License to Kill, which is the inferior of the two Dalton movies. Dalton was a great Bond BTW - The Living Daylights is in my top five Bond movies. Craig is also great. In Casino Royale Craig was on the level with Connery. I’m thinking he shouldn’t have any trouble keeping it going here. I’m psyched for this new one.

  6. In my opinion, Brosnan gets a bad rap for having to act through some pretty horrible scripts. He was the quintessential Bond in my opinion; everything that Flemming wanted Bond to be, other than a smoker. ‘GoldenEye’ was his best Bond flick and is a top five Bond movie. I think it was by no mistake either that Martin Campbell, the director of ‘Casino Royale’ also helmed ‘GoldenEye’.
Also, while we’re on it, I can’t stand Dalton’s Bond. His movies make me cringe more than Moore’s later Bond movies.

Little fun fact: Goldeneye was the name of Ian Flemming’s Jamaican estate.

  7. Andy - totally agreed, Brosnan had it quite bad, but I think he held his own quite well. People liked him as Bond, even if they didn’t like the films.

It’s only a few years back that XXX was outshining Die Another Day, now that both of those are dead .. Moving on to Casino Royale .. I’m going with Ross on that one. Bourne definitely upped the ante’ and set this in the right direction.

People did complain a little that we didn’t actually see Bond until the last minute of the film though. For those people I do worry that this too may disappoint a little, but for those like me who were happy enough just watching the action. The trailer totally sells it.

  8. I’m also going to agree with Andy. Brosnan: good Bond, bad scripts.

Casino Royale is right up there alongside From Russia With Love and Goldfinger as one of my favorite - and what I consider the best - Bond movies. Craig is indeed the most badass Bond thus far and he really made the role his own.

I, for one, absolutely loved Casino Royale and this trailer gets me giddy with a schoolboy-like excitement.

  9. Okay, so I’ve waited a post or two, but here are my top five Bond films, starting with the greatest:

    1. Goldfinger
    2. From Russia With Love
    3. Casino Royale
    4. GoldenEye
    5. Dr. No

‘Live and Let Die’ weens its way in my top 5 every now-and-then because I love Solitaire’s character. She’s even more fantastic in the novel, which is partly why I like her so much. That and because Jane Seymour is really, really hot.

    Comment by Andy — June 30, 2008 @ 10:44 pm

  10. Ok, I’ll give you that Seymour is excruciatingly hot, but Live and Let Die? Really? The production values are shit on that one. It just feels so cheap. And excluding Goldfinger, any Bond movie that ventures anywhere to the US almost inherently gets into seriously goofy territory.

Also, Dr. No is good, but I feel like it just drags a little. The Bond character is a little flat - not quite as charismatic as he would get in the great ones.

Personally, I feel like On Her Majesty’s Secret Service is one of the best - it’s in my top 5. People always rag on it because of Weatherby, but I think he’s got his own interesting take on Bond. I totally disagree with the pretty-boy criticism - he always strikes me as more of a muscle-ey brute. And the opening theme on this one may be the single greatest.

  11. OHMSS gets sh*t on a lot, unjustly in my opinion. I think Lazenby did a great job with a tough Bond script. Added a lot of dimensions to a Bond character that most Bond’s didn’t have to deal with.
‘Live and Let Die’ is fueled by the novel for me, like I said. I think it’s the best Bond novel and a lot of that carries into the movie for me. I think it’s Moore’s best, for what that’s worth.

    Comment by Andy — July 1, 2008 @ 1:25 pm

  12. I agree. I really liked On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

  13. jesus I called Lazenby Weatherby. I haven’t been getting enough sleep lately.
