According to the folks over at CHUD, Judd Apatow has approached Eric Bana to co-star with Adam Sandler in his next movie. The film will be a dramedy about stand-up comics and will also co-star Apatow regulars Seth Rogen and Leslie Mann.

Now, Bana might seem like an odd choice for an Apatow comedy – being the undeniably brilliant dramatic actor that he is – but some might not realize that Bana actually got his start by spending three years on a sketch comedy show. Word has it that if Bana were to accept, he would be playing the significant other of Mann’s character.

Honestly, while I’m a huge, huge fan of Bana’s dramatic work and think he’s one of the finest actors out there (Munich blew me away and is one of my favorites of the decade, Romulus, My Father also exceeded my high expectations, and then there is of course, his work in Chopper and Black Hawk Down – and The Time Traveler’s Wife is one I’m hotly anticipating), I’m all for him taking on something like this. It’s going back to his roots and he’d be in some of the best comedic hands out there right now – plus, with his background, he’ll should be able to balance the comedic and dramatic aspects that his role will require for this.

What do you think? Would taking this on be a good move for Bana or a waste of his time and talent?

  1. Excellent move for all involved. People forget Bana began as a stand-up in Australia.

  2. If it weren’t for the involvement of Apatow in a comedy (/drama) I would say Bana is above it. But since it is Apatow who’s involved I hope that he, Bana and Sandler (who I am getting sick of more and more all the time) create something a bit different comedy-wise.

  3. Bana has put together two of the most intense/memorable scenes for me. In ‘Blackhawk’ at the end of the movie when he’s called back out into the field and leaves base and ‘Munich’ when he’s talking to his newborn daughter on the phone… I don’t even like kids and I find that scene powerfully moving.
