• Dario Argento’s Mother of Tears Trailer

Mother of TearsI love a good horror movie but I’m not particularly well versed in either the genre or the history of the genre. I have, however, heard a whole lot about Dario Argento. Enough that last year, I broke down and purchased my very own copy of Suspiria sight unseen. I have since seen the film a number of times and come to love the style of it, even if I haven’t been particularly moved to see the second in The Three Mother‘s trilogy, 1980′s Inferno.

I’ve been meaning to catch-up for a while but with the third film in the series, Mother of Tears, on the release schedule horizon, I may have to hurry things up though I doubt I need to see the films in order to figure out what’s going on. This time around, Argento has moved from his wife to his daughter and the film stars Asia Argento as Sarah Mandy, an American art student with supernatural abilities who is charged with saving Rome from destruction by the Third Mother referred to as the Mother of Tears.

It sounds pretty harmless but that’s definitely not the case from the bits I’ve seen. This is as over the top horrific as it gets as you can see for yourself with this super-violent clip. This is no Saw or even Hostel; those are both child’s play compared to this down-right twisted vision. I urge you to use extreme caution when checking out that clip, it’s definitely not safe for work.

Mother of Tears opens in limited release on June 6th. I doubt it’ll play around here but I’ll be keeping my eyes open. I’m hoping to be surprised.

  1. Wow, I forgot that scene and how violent it was, mind you I saw this at a morning showing. It’s very Dario Argento though :)

My less than positive MOTHER OF TEARS Review over at Twitch: http://twitchfilm.net/site/view/tiff-report-the-mother-of-tears-review/

The film has some really good points, but ugh, some of it is flat out terrible.

  3. Mother of Tears is scheduled for the art multiplex near me at the end of the month. In spite of the reviews, I still plan to see it on the not very big screen. I have seen almost all of Argento’s films. Inferno has some pretty good stuff that was shot by Mario Bava, but if you are going to check out other Argento films, I recommend Deep Red.

@Peter, we were just discussing Dario Argento on our latest cinecast (which will be up at some point this week). While I do indeed love the ‘fever dream’ logic that Argento brings to his films, tragically Mother of Tears often plays too much like a parody (or bad imitator) of his one stuff to work for me, although I do know a number of people who did dig the film.

A big fan of Profundo Rosso, as well as Susperia and Phenomena. I didn’t know that Bava was involved with Inferno! Should give that one a revisit, it’s been ages.

Thanks for the recommendation Peter. Surprising (?!) Zip has it so it’s been added to my queue!

Dario kills. In my mind, he can do no wrong and I’m sure Mother of Tears will rock. You can find me in the front row of the Nuart on Friday.
