It is. There'll be some good chat, praise for The Strangers on the Cinecast when we record Tuesday, I think Andrew & I are on the same page on this one. We both saw the good in the film, where as a lot of the people got hung up on The Bad (i.e. Jump Scare tactics, which are a part of the film, but shouldn't negate the precise control that all of the scenes are set up with. There is some talent at work behind The Strangers...)

Swarez, you've got it sir. although without the pedagogy of Hanekes remake/original, and a tad more visceral than the French film.

If you cannot sit back and admire the sheer craft that went into this piece, a craft that eschews the junkfood approach that American Horror has taken over the past decade, a case can certainly be made for the quality of this film.

I was amused to see how the audience reacted so poorly to it in my theatre, (for the first half) mocking the drama and character moments, but the film seemed to shut a few of them up during the second half.

I hate the Saw Franchise and junk like The Eye (remake) and Prom Night (remake) for

And then something reasonably fresh like Inside (A La Interieur) is straight to DVD? Shitty. Hopefully The Strangers will succeed where Wolf Creek failed, in putting straight-up solid craftsmanship horror films back on the screen.

Sure I want more than The Strangers delivered, but it delivered quite a lot compared to the last few couple of Platinum Dunes and Japanese remakes...

So I went to watch it today and I have to say, I think it sucked. I just don't find jump scares scary, and that's all The Strangers is. That style of "horror" is why slashers suck so much, and I had hoped American horror had actually matured enough to move beyond such simplistic methods.

Also, after reading Ebert's review of the film I have lost all respect for him as a critic.

I haven't seen it yet, but I am going with a group tonight to go see it. I'm going in with pretty low expectations, but I really do hope it is a good horror film. God knows the genre could use some. (US horror anyways)

I must admit that I had some expectations that this would be good, better even than Ils (Which I liked, but thought was just missing a little something to be getting the praise it was getting).

Even with Expectations and a Friday Night theatre filled with assholes and neanderthal moron teenagers I stilled managed to enjoy the heck out of it. Rare in this type of horror film for me.
