Unbeatable Tag Team: Herzog and Lynch

by Andrew James
May 15th, 2008

From an early morning post by the Hollywood Reporter, it looks like Werner Herzog is going to be having a very busy next 12 monthd. After wrapping up a shoot of the remake for Bad Lieutenant and another film this fall (The Piano Tuner, he’ll be teaming up with the legendary David Lynch to helm a film entitled, My Son, My Son; which is “loosely based on the true story of a San Diego man who acts out a Sophocles play in his mind and kills his mother with a sword. The low-budget feature will flash back and forth from the murder scene to the disturbed man’s story.”

Principal photography is set to begin in March. It’s hard to tell if Herzog is co-directing with Lynch on this one or if Herzog is just getting the co-writer credit (he co-penned the script with long time assistant director, Herbert Golder). These developments are a bit vague, but I’m sure we’ll be keeping close tabs on this one in months to come.

Seriously though. How cool is this?

  1. Oh my god I think I need to change my underwear!:P Lynch and Herzog working together?! I am already in line!:P Seriously though, Lynch is almost my favourite director (Tarantino still has the top spot but I think if I watch any of Lynch’s movies one more time he may snatch it from QT) and after seeing Aguirre, Wrath of God and the Woyzeck (which features, imo, one of the best male performances of all time by Kinski) Herzog is quickly making his way onto and up my list of favourite directors.

These two are some of the masters of dream like filmmaking and to even have them standing in the same room never mind working on a film together is a fantastic sight to behold.

  2. Is this becoming the Herzog Gossip site?

This pairing is too good to be true although again this is strange, how do two artists like these compromise to make something together?

I have a theory about this shift to overt violence and sexuality in the upcoming Herzog canon: his mother died after Rescue Dawn and she was a loyal follower of his work, maybe there was some kind of decency level put upon his work recognizing that his mother was part of the audience, but now he is raising the stakes… seeing as he has already raised the stakes in every other way.

  3. Another amusing tidbit - Lynch’s production outfit “Absurda” is paying for a new Alejandro Jodorowsky film (this is a weird circle completing, considering Jodorowsky was originally slated to direct DUNE back in the late 1970s)

Asia Argento and Udo Kier and Nick Nolte are to star in Alejandro Jodorowsky’s metaphysical gangster movie King Shot.

which upon a quick google search, Twitch had a series of concept art posted for it way back when…Glad to see that the new Jodorowsky ain’t dead…

  4. hmmm. these herzog rumors are weird. Herzog / Lynch are both great for the same reason that would make them poor colaborators.

if the story has a flash back structure maybe herzog directs one timeline and lynch the other. That’s at least cool on paper.

I’m excited about the Jodorowsky news.
