The other day I was reading a post over at Quiet Earth about City of Ember. Agentorange was commenting on how this could be the first Post Apocalyptic Children’s film. I was intrigued by his argument, along with the fact that the film has a fantastic looking cast. We’ve got Bill Murray, Tim Robbins, Martin Landau and Saoirse Ronan, who a few may remember as the young Briony in Atonement, in her first leading role.
Based on Jeanne Duprau’s novel, the film tells the story of a futuristic world in which people have built an underground city which will only sustain the population for 200 years. When the countdown almost reaches an end, two teenagers search Ember for clues that will unlock the ancient mystery of the city’s existence and how to escape.
If that cast and story don’t sound good enough, how about the fact that this is directed by Gil Kenan who brought Monster House to life? It’s interesting that he’s moved from animation to live action, I’m not familiar with too many directors who have done this, but he certainly managed to impress with that little film so I’m hopeful he’ll do good things with this new project.
The teaser trailer is pretty impressive and I particularly love the visuals. I’m definitely on board to see this one. City of Ember opens on October 10th.
Trailer is tucked under the seat!

Cast is interesting (even if the veterans definately look like they are slumming it) and concept is interesting enough in a Logan’s Run meets Dark City meets National Treasure sort of way.
But Walden Media have the most awful bland execution to seemingly interesting projects with potential. The Cynic in my says they’ll drop the ball on this one too, you can actually see it happening as the trailer goes on. I dislike this company more than Disney and Blue Sky who occasionally get one right. So Far Walden is 0 for 3 with me. (Check out their sea of extruded plastic dinguses here: http://www.imdb.com/company/co0073388/)
Kurt stole every one of my comments.
You Know, For Kids!
The City Of Ember trailer looks really good. I love how the scenery in the trailer looks very dark and ominous like the books. Although it does have similarities to other movies that have come out I think City Of Ember has a combination of factors that will put it over the top. Such as an amazing cast from Tim Robbins to Bill Murray, Tom Hanks and Walden Media produced the film and Caroline Thompson adapted the screenplay!
I cannot wait for October 10th!
My name is Blair and I am an official ambassador for City of Ember and I have access to first-look pics of the movie not seen in the trailer, which I would be more than happy to share with you. I would love to have your help spreading the word about City of Ember and get the buzz going!
I hope I’m not over stepping any bounds by posting on your blog.
Hope to speak with you soon.
