Anime at the Vancouver Art Gallery
I‘m not much of a gallery goer but even I’ll admit that the Vancouver Art Gallery seems to be on the cutting edge of the art world. They constantly have interesting and innovative presentations and their most recent is all of the above.
KRAZY! The Delirious World of Anime + Comics + Video Games + Art appears to be a fantastic and interesting look at the animated world and I must say, I’m really excited to check it out.
From the official website:
The first exhibition of its kind, a groundbreaking project that offers unique and dynamic insight into the world of comics, animated cartoons, anime, manga, graphic novels, computer/video games and visual art. Spanning a century of artmaking, the works in this exhibition reveal an extraordinary history of production, one that is poised to redefine the scope of visual culture in the 21st century.
With outstanding examples of original sketches, notes, concept drawings, final production drawings, animation cells, three-dimensional models and published works, KRAZY! promises a rare insight into the mind and method of some of the finest artists at work today.
If that’s not enough, I was checking out the upcoming events and discovered that on May 16th and 17th, they’re also showing “highlights from eight animated films featured in the exhibition” and their selection of films is impressive and includes Gertie the Dinosaur, The Adventures of Prince Achmed, Gerald McBoing-Boing, Black Hula, Akira, Wallace & Grommit in The Wrong Trousers, Over the Hedge and Paprika. To boot, that special presentation is completely free.
The exhibit runs May 17th to September 7th.
