For some reason I’m obsessed with award ceremonies. Yes, even the MTV awards were of some interest in the past. Not for their necessity and obviously not for taking them serious or giving films any sort of leg up (if anything, it probably hinders a film’s credibility – at least those of us in the above 13 age group).
But in the past, I always liked some of the more fun awards (best fight, best kiss, etc). Not to mention we now have the most ridiculous category of all time: “Best Summer Movie So Far” – what the fuck is that? But I also always liked how they at least tried to recognize comedy (unlike the Oscars). So yeah, they mean nothing, they’re pretty shallow and petty and ultimately stupid; but for some reason The MTV Movie Awards are entertaining and I can’t not look.
And this year, the nominees are so utterly preposterous that I can’t see how you can NOT be interested in this. I mean seriously, when you’ve got an award show in which the nominees for best picture include I Am Legend (I wonder if MTV has a vested interest in Will Smith?) and National Treasure 2, how can you not watch this? It’s like the Uwe Boll version of award shows. So without any further commentary (I leave that to you), the nominees for the 2008 MTV Movie Awards are:

This show has always been a bit off, but this could quite possibly be the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen.
I’m not that familiar with the MTV Awards. I would like to know who nominates the films. Is our movie culture based on self-fulfilling prophecies brought on by the critics and journalists?

It was more ridiculous last year when they had the “Best movie you haven’t seen yet” category, just to get Transformers in there somewhere. I think it is Viacom that owns both MTV and Paramount right?
If Row Three wants to do a contest, I will gladly supply one of the shitty movies I’ve had to review for UGO as the winning prize.

This just goes to prove once again that this is the most idiotic movie awards show on the planet. Best Female Performance – Jessica Biel for Chuck & Larry?! Best Fight – AVP 2?! And yes – having I Am Legend, National Treasure 2, Transformers and Pirates 3 in the Best Movie catagory?! Even though I complain sometimes about some of the films that get recognition at the Oscars (e.g. mediocre films getting lots of noms because of a single amazing lead performance) I would much rather have that than the popular films being nominated just because the majority has heard of/seen them.
“Once” is nowhere to be seen. I thought this was MUSIC television’s awards. Again – ridiculous.
And by having some good noms such as Bardem and Washington it’s like rubbing all of us who see sense’s noses in it….lol like we care! Mwuah ha ha!
