May DVD Releases of Note

by Andrew James
May 5th, 2008

Not a list of every DVD that is being released this month. Just a list of DVDs I found noteworthy or might be of interest to someone. If you have more, by all means post ‘em in the comments section. Aside from the opening week, this is a pretty lackluster month in terms on new release DVDs. Oh well; theatrically speaking, May is looking up compared to the early part of 2008. Spend your money there instead. Nevertheless, here are DVDs for May…

  1. Looks like a decent month. Looking forward to catching up with “Teeth” and it’s nice to see Lucas continuing in the double dip tradition with Indy. I’m NOT picking up that bloody set - I have the earlier box set that will do me just fine.

*Really* looking forward to a couple of other things including Diary of the Dead, Youth Without Youth (finally) a second viewing of Walk All Over Me. Most exciting selection for the month is “The Walker” which has been on my watch list since VIFF. It’ll be great to finally get caught up with that…especially now that I know what a “walker” is.

  2. Aside from “Teeth” and “I’m Not There”, it actually looks like a pretty boring month to me.

  3. I’m with Goon on this. Do we really need a Special Edition of Twister? I am interested in Youth without Youth, despite the complete mainstream disinterest, the digital visuals in Coppola’s new film look solid.

And while Diary of the Dead was a blast in the theatre with a crowd, I’m leery that it will flop around lifeless during a home viewing.

  4. I agree that it’s a pretty weak month; though there is at least one thing each week that has me interested.

“I’m not There” is a MUST, “Walk All Over Me” interests me and “Diary of the Dead” has me pretty excited!

Then there are the ones I have not see which intrigue me: Bella, The Air I Breathe and The Walker.

  5. I bought more DVDs today than I will for the rest of the month, and for all the wrong reasons. The local No Frills (Kurt knows this chain) put out an amazing batch of DVDs that I bought with the intent of reselling to Blockbuster or Beat Goes On (used store) for a small profit

This includes numerous copies of the 4 disc edition of Superman, which I bought for 3.99 per copy.

  6. I really hope that Over Her Dead Body isn’t of interest to anyone. But I know that’s too much to ask of humanity.

  7. ‘I’m Not There’,Youth Without Youth’, and ‘Diary’ look good. I really want ‘Diary’ to be amazing and I think that George may take the zombie realm back to where ‘Land of the Dead’ should have gone. I want to see Rambo because I heard that he kills, literally, everyone who’s a bad guy.

  8. Diary is terrible. I highly suggest you rent it before you buy it.

Youth Without Youth is an absolute mess. Which pretty much means Kurt will fawn all over it like a lovesick puppy.

Also got my advance copy of the Indiana Jones box set and from a very quick glance I am unimpressed. Hopefully when I start watching everything my mind will change.

  9. Liz - I’m with you but there’ll be *someone* out there running out to rent it tomorrow. Yikes!

“The Air I Breathe” was a disaster. Review is forthcoming but even the fabulous Brendan Fraser couldn’t save this one.

  10. I’m really looking forward to Youth Without Youth. And although I probably own some of them already, I might have to pick up that snazzy James Stewart western collection before long.

  11. Wow, a lot of those feel like 2008 releases which feels like a quite turnaround to DVD. I feel so oldskool saying that. Looking forward to catching up with Youth Without Youth and Walk All Over Me.

  12. “I really hope that Over Her Dead Body isn’t of interest to anyone.”

One question: does Longoria get naked in it?

    Comment by Andrew James — May 6, 2008 @ 12:32 am

  13. Oh yes, and just to admit it now, I’m a huge Hilary Swank fan, so I will be picking up her movie from the store tomorrow if one comes in.

Just shake your head. Commentary on that admission is not necessary.

PS - When I say “the store”, I don’t mean actually purchasing it. I mean I will borrow it from my store.

  14. @Andrew - I can honestly admit that my love of Butler is no where near strong enough to warrant even a rental.
