  • FREE SCREENINGS – Street Kings

    0

Street Kings Movie StillFox Searchlight made my winter that much better by screening a number of films I was looking forward to, for free, to fans. I thought this practice would be limited to small, indie type films but it looks like I was incorrect in my assumption.

I caught wind today, care of the good folks at TIFF Reviews, that Fox will be screening David Ayer’s upcoming cop drama Street Kings (starring Keanu Reeves, Forest Whitaker, Hugh Laurie, Chris Evans and Common).

Check out the trailer and if you’re interested in a screening, be sure to head over to Fox Searchlight to RSVP for one near you!

  • Best News I’ve Heard in Years

April FoolCould I get anymore excited? I don’t think so. All the classic action heroes really Are returning for a final bout! Thanks to MovieHole for bringing us this major nugget of info!

It was bound to happen eventually – especially after he agreed to bring back ‘The Man in the Hat’ for another round (Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull opens in May). Harrison Ford has agreed to play the intergalactic smug smuggler, Han Solo, one more time.

Han Solo, based on a script by Star Wars veteran Carrie Fisher, will tell of the Space Pirate’s post-“Return of the Jedi” life – his rocky relationship with Leia, their mischievous Jedi-training twins, and principally, Solo’s ongoing battle with The Hutt’s, says George Lucas International; via BrokenDroid.com.

“Harrison has always said he wouldn’t do another Star Wars movie – particularly the sequels to Return of the Jedi”, says producer. “When we presented him an idea to star in a Han Solo movie though, that was different. This would be Solo’s story, not Luke [Skywalker’s] – and once we told him the story, he was in. But more so, Carrie Fisher wrote the first draft, and knocked it out of the park”.

Ford describes the film as “thrilling, but packed with adventure and still connected to the world George [Lucas] invented. Han is still his arrogant, cheeky self”.

Ford will begin work on “Han Solo” after completing the upcoming “What Lies Beneath” sequel. Fox has asked to film for a 2011 release. A director is yet to be announced.

This one is for a co-worker. I’ve never seen the movie so no comments from me about it other than I’m not too interested in seeing it ever. Let me know if I’m wrong and should see it if you know what movie this is from.

  • Jules Dassin Steals into Heaven (at 96)

    2

RififiKnown for his hard-bitten crime dramas and his redefinition of the heist film, director Jules Dassin passed away March 31st at 96. Thieves Highway, Night and the City and The Naked City would be as fine an introduction to noir as anything else out there, but I really, really have a soft spot for his heist picture Rififi. While the characters and story are somewhat familiar and a little slow to get to the centerpiece of the film, when you get there, well, cinematic Heaven. You see for over 25 minutes there isn’t a line of dialogue, just drills, hammering, and criminal labour to get to the goods. You can’t watch a modern heist picture and not acknowledge this film. (Also, the Criterion edition of the DVD is inexpensive and available. On a personal note, I believe it was the first Criterion Disc I ever purchased.) There is not a better way to remember this fine American director who did most of his work in Europe due to the blacklisting and chicanery of the era

Daily Greencine has more on Dassin here.
