With our obvious love around here for the Vampire genre (see Vampyre Chronicles) and one of our writer’s pedophilic obsession with rising young star Kristin Stewart (Into the Wild), her newest project directed by Catherine Hardwicke (Thirteen, Lords of Dogstown) probably won’t go overlooked come screen time by patrons of the third row.
In sort of a Narnia or Harry Potter-esque franchise, the series of books entitled “Twilight” is getting the film treatment and will feature Stewart as a young woman who has fallen in love with a vampire. These are the stories of the unconventional couple’s exploits. Said vampire is played by Harry Potter’s Robert Pattinson with other roles still being announced.
Kristin Stewart – from MTV.com:
“The cool thing about the story is that it’s a seemingly wonderful fantasy — let’s fall in love with vampires and live forever — but it’s so much harder than that. Imagine living forever. Living one life is hard enough.”
But don’t get fooled into thinking this is going to be ‘The Notebook’ for the undead. “The main character is like, superhuman,” Stewart said of the action scenes in the script. “He’s a vampire, but with really [heightened powers]; he can run faster than a car can drive, and he’s super strong. He throws me over his back [in one scene], right before he’s going to tell me that he’s a vampire, and then he runs over the treetops. And we’re going to be in real treetops; we’re not just going to CGI it. We actually get to go up there, and that’s what I’m stoked on.”
I’m not familiar with this book series at all, but apparently it’s pretty popular among older teens these days. I’m a big fan of Joss Whedon’s “Buffy,” so hopefully this series will be as smart, engaging and as popular as that series was/is. Judging from Stewart’s comments, it sounds like maybe we’ve got a good story with some characters that are a bit deeper than your average, run of the mill Vampire flick.
Currently a trilogy, hopefully we’ll see a quality big screen adaptation that can bring about a new franchise that does suck.
UPDATE: I just found a couple of behind-the-scenes featurettes. One’s from Entertainment Tonight (via our good friends over at WorstPreviews.com) and the other from MTV. I’ll stick the videos under the seat if you’re interested:

Featurette #2

I have refrained from putting anything up about this project mostly because I’m insanely biased about the entire thing. LOVE the books (which surprised me) and I love the director and to be frank, this is so not my demographic.
That said, the books are popular mostly because they’re very hip – not to mention Bella is no write off. She’s smart and just happens to have fallen for a guy who’s a vampire. What makes the stories work is that although the relationships are have the problem of being interspecies, they share similarities to regular teenage romances.
I was never a big Buffy fan (though I loved the movie) but I don’t see this being anything like it – mostly because Stewart’s character, though not defenseless, isn’t kicking ass either, and she’s not popular in the typical sense of the term. The only similarity is the romance between Angel and Buffy. May not be enough for males but it’ll play nicely to the teenage (and mid 20′s) girl crowds.
Oh god. I’m sounding like a fangirl.
And hey, she just turned 18 a couple of weeks ago. We no longer have to report to the authorities of Kurt’s obsession.
Oh! I didn’t realize Kurt had an obsession!
A friend of mine is working on this film here in Portland.
Ah yes. The books take place in Forks, which I understand, has now become some sort of mecca for fans.
Hey, I just mentioned on a cinecast that she was one of the most eye-popping sizzling starlets to saunter onto the screen for some time….Is that an obsession? I’m not requesting her mail me used clothing or anything…at least, not to my home address.
The fan girl is in full swing. G4 coverage from the set including long interview with Hardwicke:
I’m curious about the fact that they haven’t shown ANY footage of the baseball scene which is one of the best in the novel and I expect will be quite the CG fest in the movie – that worries me a little.
The other thing is that I didn’t realize how bloody cheery Hardwicke. For some reason, her bubbly personality surprised me.
I hope they fire the ugly bitch. She single handedly ruined Twilight…. and come to think of it, every other movie I’ve ever seen her in. Half of her fan base are teenagers who look up to her, and she smokes pot in broad daylight! What a good role model, huh? Not to mention she said she thinks all of her fans are retarded, and she’s bitchy and rude in all of her interviews. The best thing they could do for New Moon is forget about firing Taylor Lautner and fire Kristin!
Yay! Oh thank you llena! You have taken the words right out of my mouth! If she is in New Moon I will NOT go see it. I have found that there are alot of people that cannot stand her, hoping Summit will read all of this from all the different people that can’t stand her and RECAST BELLA!!!
i am your fan through your twilight fans you know i love twilight pls can you add through my web laprimera_01@yahoo.compls add me thanks
huh?
Also just noticed the other comment about boycotting the movie if Kris Stewart is in it. Who are you trying to kid? Please. Everyone knows you’ll (one of the teeny fan girls) be there on opening night at midnight with ticket in hand and your Robert Pattinson t-shirt; giddy as a school girl.
I just read that the director of the very mature and very classy THE ORPHANAGE is being tapped do direct one of the upcoming Twilight Saga novels (the third one). Good for him if he wants to come over to Hollywood, but part of me thinks that this material is a total waste of his considerable abilities.
All these rumours are bullshit. Seriously, it’s a new name added every day to the point that the list of people “who are being considered” is longer than I can remember. It’s all speculation though if the franchise could get someone of his calibre on board, it would definitely be a move in the right direction – especially for Eclipse which is my favourite of the 3 books.
@Andrew The Stewart boycott BS is nothing new either. It’s been going since the beginning but I’d venture to say the number of people who really dislike her that much will indeed overlook it for loverboy.
Jesus! Twilight fans, who knew? Move over obsessive Whedon and Watchmen fans. There’s a new ugly fan base plague-ing the internet.
It makes sense, in my experience women are much more territorial than men.
Rusty, until the author gets death threats, it ain’t reaching Whedonite proportions.
But I’m not in the Twilight fandom, so what do I know? Maybe she HAS received death threats.
Are you refering to some specific inicident? Do fans write death threats to the people they love?
I think most people who are exposed to a mass audience have recieved death threats. Or at least some pretty outlandish hate mail.
And who are you? And why do you have articles on Rowthree all of a sudden?
Joss got death threats after he killed Tara off on Buffy. I’m sure you’re right, though, about most famous people getting hate mail/death threats at some point. The whole post-Tara fallout was huge in the Buffy fandom, though.
I’m a new writer here, just started joining in a week or so ago.
@ Joss got death threats after he killed Tara off on Buffy.
oh yeah. I sort of remember that.
You’re picture makes you look like your about 6 years old. How did you join up?
Yeah, that was a rough time for the Whedon fandom. I was glad I was only tangentially involved with fandom at the time.
I’m a bit more than 6 years old, I promise.
The other writers apparently liked my writing on my personal site (www.the-frame.com).
@ “How did you join up?”
I threatened that if we didn’t find another female voice pronto, I was leaving.
In all seriousness, it’s fantastic to have you onboard Jandy!
Also, it’s true that female based fandom appears to be “more territorial” than men but I disagree with that point. The reason it appears that way is because for the most part, women tend to keep their fandom to themselves and inside where no one sees it and the only reason we’re starting to see it outwardly reflected is the ease and wide spread use of technology which facilitates the coming together of the fans both locally and world wide. Heck, the two largest fan groups in Vancouver are the Serenity group and The 13th Colony (a BSG group) and both are organized by women.
The Twilight fandom is a bit different because it includes so many young (pre-teen & teen) fans. As with any fandom, the crazies attract most of the attention, but we’re not all crazed.
I think all fandoms are territorial, it kinda goes with the… wait for it… territory.
