To be honest, I’ve never heard of Scott Pilgrim, but looking around the web, I guess it’s a pretty popular series of graphic novels. The whole idea seems like a pretty crazy concept, but now that I hear Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) is on board to direct Scott Pilgrim’s Little Life and they snagged Michael Cera (Superbad, Arrested Development) for the lead role, I’m pretty interested.
Cinematical describes the story as being about “a 23-year-old slacker, who meets the girl of his dreams. To win her heart, he must defeat her seven evil ex-boyfriends. It’s chock full of video game references, from evil bosses to power-ups, but manages to stay fairly grounded in reality.”
Okay. I’m not really sure what to say, except this really sounds like, uh, somethin’ else. But this is Edgar Wright! And who hasn’t been charmed by the awkwardness of Michael Cera? Their powers combined just screams loads of laughs – and maybe we’ll even get a Simon Pegg cameo in there too. I might have to get my hands on the graphic novel and flip through it a bit just to get a little more of an idea here (is this family friendly? is it potentially R-rated? etc.), but this sounds like it will be tough to adapt into a feature film, although I’ll continue to have faith in Edgar Wright until he gives me a reason not too.
Anyone out there ever read or heard of Scott Pilgrim?

Edgar Wright has ‘worked’ with Cera before in this faux interview, which is hilarious:
Ooops. They pulled that video pretty quickly!
Cera is always good in his roles but it seems like he always plays the same straight laced “quirky” guy. Don’t get me wrong, he does it better than most but it’s starting to get old. I hope this gives him the chance to stretch a little.
Arrested Development. Superbad. Juno. That’s about all he’s done really. Pretty similar characters, sure… but enough that it’s starting to get old already? It’s not like he can go into a comedy playing prom king Mr. Jock Johnson.
And it’s not like he is being obnoxiously repetitive like Will Ferrell or just plain unfunny repetitive like 1997-present Mike Myers.
Personally, I’m not even close to tiring of Cera yet. His line delivery is pristine.
Will Ferrell is fucking way funnier than Michael Cera. Although I admit he had his moments in Superbad like when he told the fat guy that at least he got to suck on his dads cock.
I’m actually not against actors playing the cards they know will win them points but I think there’s more to Cera than just playing the geeky awkward guy and I want to see it on the screen.
As for Ferrell…he has his moments but then he’s also been cracking jokes longer than Cera has been alive.
What’s being overlooked here is the genius of the story line. I think it’s original and sounds pretty funny. To save the princess, you must defeat seven levels – collecting power-ups along the way. If it’s done properly, this could be really funny.
Oh yeah. Not saying it’s NOT going to be funny but I hope Cera gets a chance to show us something OTHER than what we’ve already seen coming from him!
During TIFF, I was in an elevator at the Four Seasons with Michael Cera, he was describing his wide-format analogue camera to a girl he was with, and I swear his cadence was exactly the same as in Arrested Dev/Juno/SuperBad.
That being said, I like his acting style.
And while Will Farell can be positively brilliant, he does waaaay to many films with hokey concepts that come across as embarassing and diluting the overall quality. I can take or leave the guy.
Sounds like I may be wishing for too much. Ah well, as long as he keeps choosing good roles and keeps me laughing, I’m good.
And I just realized that he’s Canadian so he gets an extra gold star.
Ditto Andrew, this looks like a freaking hilarious concept. Very curious to see how it goes.
