Naked Daniel Craig Sells Flashbacks of a Fool Trailer

Flashbacks Of A Fool Movie StillDaniel Craig is not on my “must watch” list but he’s on the “keep an eye out because he’s going to surprise you” list. Though I don’t recall seeing him in anything before I spotted him in Munich, I’ve liked him in everything since then and he always seems to surprise me with his roles.

Sci-fi films, animation, action, indies, he’s everywhere and he’s always good, even if the films aren’t. You figure the new Bond doesn’t need to bother with small films but Craig isn’t about to stop working on films that interest him to settle for the big blockbuster and small film is exactly the way Flashbacks of a Fool looks.

Craig plays a fading Hollywood star who is coming to grips with some long repressed momories. The film seems to be set as much in the present as in his youth and though the trailer doesn’t really say much, other than the fact that he’s losing it, it does look gorgeous. Throw in the retro music and setting, Craig looking dashing (I don’t blame anyone for trying to get some more attention by having Craig prance around naked) and a director who seems to be in love with the 70’s and we may have something here.

Flashbacks of a Fool opens in the UK on April 18th. Only time and success will tell if and when we’ll have a chance to see it.

  1. Road to Perdition, Layer Cake, Munich, then Casino Royale - and he’s still on your “keep an eye out because he’s going to surprise you” list?? You’re a tough sell, Marina.

Anyway, hard to tell from the trailer what the movie is really going to be like, but I’m digging it. Hopefully it will showcase how well this man can really act.

  2. Enduring Love? Perhaps the actors finest performance.

  3. I don’t consider myself a tough sell but I didn’t see Road to Perdition, Layer Cake or Enduring Love. Munich was the first time I recall seeing him in anything.

  4. Wow. Stellar cinematography! Not surprising I guess as it seems to be the guy who’s worked closely with Ridley Scott a lot in the past.

Probably some other faces to watch in here too. Looks like some really good performances by unknowns. Of course, that’s what trailers are designed to do, so we’ll have to wait and see. But for now, I’m definitely intrigued.

  5. Road to Perdition is one of the best american films of the 00s.

  6. Agreed 100%, Henrik.

  7. @ Road to Perdition — Do Not Agree. But it’s a good film nonetheless.

  8. How can you not agree? I totally made an each way bet because technically, anything that isn’t the worst could be considered one of the best!

Anyway, it’s one of my favourite movies.

  9. It’s an interesting choice, and a well made movie, with some fine moments, but I found it a bit flat in execution. I’ve only seen the film twice (once theatrically, once DVD), I admired many parts, but never came to actually ‘love the film’.

I understand I’m not making much of a point here, but it’s been a few years and the film is rather fuzzy in my brain….

  10. Give it another chance if you find the time. I’m not expecting your opinion to change, of course, but maybe you’ll enjoy it more now that you’re older and wiser. ;-) I can’t think of a way they could have executed with less perfection. The cinematography is outstanding (done by the legendary Conrad L. Hall), the sets, the costumes, the sound, the beautiful piano and string-accompanied music by Thomas Newman, top fucking notch performances by Newman, Hanks, Craig, and co., a well-written and tragic script - I’m not sure what more you could ask for in a movie.

I’m not sure if you recall, but the scene near the end in the rain with Hanks in the shadows and Newman and his cronies… and everything is silent but the music, then as Hanks walks out of the shadows, the sound slowly fades in, the pitter-pattering of the rain, then the look on Newman’s face and the way he delivers his line… So effective, pulls all of the right strings. I’d put that as a top ten Paul Newman moment (and I’m sure you know my crazy obsession with the man). The scene is just masterful in every respect.

And the movie is full of moments like that for me. Another scene that comes to mind is the one with Newman and Hanks playing the piano together at the party. Another great, great scene. I could gush on and on.

  11. It’s Tom Hanks best performance by far.

  12. For my money, Tom Hanks best performance was in Joe Dante’s THE ‘BURBS.

    Comment by AUDREY — November 25, 2008 @ 3:29 pm

  22. Haha - are you a real person?

Anyway, I’d probably give this a C+. Very flawed and a somewhat sloppy script, but enjoyable. The acting was all pretty solid, although Craig was very underused surprisingly.

And yes, you do see him bum!
