Updated: Zooey Deschanel at SXSW

March 16th, 2008
Written By: Andrew James

Zooey Deschanel appeared at SXSW festival in Austin, TX today. But not on the film circuit. Regular reader, Ty Webb, just sent me some pictures he took with his cell phone of her performing with her band (which includes artist, M. Ward). There were some comments on RowThree recently gushing over Miss Deschanel (man, she’s got a surprisingly large filmography!), so I just thought I’d share…

You can click the images for a bigger version
remember, these were taken with a cell phone cam, so I apologize for the lack of quality.

  1. Ooooooooo Fabulous! I didn’t realize she was a musician as well. I’m all for the Deschanel love.

    Thanks for sharing Ty!

  2. Definitely we should divide this site along the lines of the Amy Adams camp and the Zooey Deschanel camp. I’m in the latter until convinced otherwise.

  3. Oi. I like both but I’m with you in the Deschanel camp.

  4. I first heard Zooey’s singing voice in Elf.

    Re: AA and ZD, I like them both too!

  5. Zooey all the way

    Comment by rot — March 14, 2008

  6. Zooey was also in the sweet Bridge To Taribethia.

    Comment by Rusty James — March 14, 2008

  7. Zooey is also in The Assassination of Jesse James.

  8. OK, while Andrew is out of the building, lets grab our pitchforks and torches, and lynch his Adams loving ass. Who’s with me?

    :)

    Comment by Kurt — March 14, 2008

  9. How do you lynch someone while they’re out of the building?

    Comment by Rusty James — March 14, 2008

  10. You take to the streets with lit torches and hunt them down. :)

    Comment by Kurt — March 14, 2008

  11. “Hang man, hang man… wait a little while. I think I see my sister coming, ridin many miles… what did you bring me my sister… to keep me from the gallows pole?”

    Oscar nominations:
    Adams = 2
    Deschanel = 0

    Comment by Andrew James — March 15, 2008

  12. Zooey, of course. I’ve loved her in everything I’ve seen her in especially Winter Passing. A low-quality 30 second soundclip from these pics would of been sweet. Could easily beat hearing 3 songs of lame lip-syncing.

    Comment by Primal — March 15, 2008

  13. I’m looking for that sound clip. My local MPR station is streaming most of the festival’s music online. In the meantime, here’re more pics. By the way, the name of their band is “She and Him”.

    Comment by Andrew James — March 15, 2008

  14. And by the way, as awesome as Deschanel is, if you’re not listening to M. Ward, you’re seriously missing out.

    Comment by Andrew James — March 15, 2008

  15. @ Oscar nominations:
    Adams = blah
    Deschanel = blaaaaaaahhhhhhh

    There you go again. Arg!

    isn’t “nominated” just another way of saying they lost.

    Comment by Rusty James — March 16, 2008

  16. or a way to say they were ripped off by a lesser actor and role in a lesser film… *cough*rachel wiesz*cough*.

    Comment by Andrew James — March 16, 2008

  17. She has only been nominated once Andrew.

    Comment by Henrik — March 16, 2008

  18. @ “or a way to say they were ripped off by a lesser actor and role in a lesser film… *cough*rachel wiesz*cough*.”

    it seems like the point you’re making is that winning Oscars doesn’t really mean very much.

    Comment by Rusty James — March 16, 2008

  19. touche.

    But is it illegal or something to like Zooey Deschanel and Amy Adams? I didn’t realize you can only like one of them as this hijacked thread seems to suggest.

    Comment by Andrew James — March 16, 2008

  20. yes, it is illegal or something to like Zooey Deschanel and Amy Adams. It’s also a crime to be able to tell the difference between Bill Pullman and Bill Paxton.

    I guess we did sort of hijaak your thread. Sorry ’bout that. Kurt can be a trouble maker. At least we didn’t shanghai your caboose.

    Comment by Rusty James — March 16, 2008

  21. I do like we’ve split into Deschanel vs Adams factions. It’s like that episode of LOST.

    Thread jack check mate!!!!!!!!!

  23. Hey, no shit here. I just signed on to say THANKS, and I love Zooey and M. I would say who is Amy Adams, but I do know who she is. She just wasn’t on stage singing with She and Him.

    The album is definitely on my ‘to buy’ list.

  26. “I’m in the latter until convinced otherwise.”

    Kurt apparently doesnt know what “latter” means if he’s in the Zooey camp.

    She & Him sucks, they are ridiculously boring, and she is an even blander singer than M. Ward. Ridiculously overrated only getting attention because its her.

    Amy Adams is ridiculously better than Zoeey as an actress, and while the singing she did in Enchanted was fluff, it was certainly a hell of a lot more entertaining. Amy has more range and can properly do both comedy and drama, Zooey was in the Happening, and is pretty much the same in everything. I don’t even think she’s better than Scarlett.

  28. Even Amy Adams’ short run on the Office showed more character and chops than Zooey has ever done. She’s emotionally distant in everything - that works in All the Real Girls for her, gives her some mystery, but for everything - EVERYTHING - else, she’s off putting or miscast. Was a terrible choice to play Trillian in HHG.

    I’d like to thank this thread for making me realize that Zooey sucks by comparing her to a wonderful actress with an actual acting career ahead of her.

    Fuckers.

    Comment by Goon — March 21, 2009

  29. Goon, it’s a year-old-post. Amy had only been nominated once at that point. Maybe we should credit Andrew with prescience?

    I’m sorry, y’all, I refuse to choose between Amy and Zooey. I like them both.

    Well, okay. If I must, I choose Amy. Because I think she’s the most adorable thing ever created. But Zooey’s got those eyes, man…yeah, I’ll watch either of them in anything. So my reasoning is shallow. So sue me.

  30. hah, since the most recent posts were all in March 08 I didnt even look at the year stamp.

    Comment by Goon — March 21, 2009

  31. I did the same thing at first when it popped up in the recent comments feed. I was like, I didn’t know She & Him were at SXSW this year! Then realized it was last year. D’oh.

    Comment by Jandy Stone — March 21, 2009

  32. I find both of them ridiculous attractive. Amy Adams in Charlie Wilson’s War was hard to bear emotionally. I was disappointed that she wasn’t better in Doubt, I thought she would have some dramatic weight, but I never felt her. Felt like acting to me. Watching her sing on the Oscars was also hard to bear emotionally though.
